Found the answer in another post — here:

In short, the ID we were given (“C001”) has to be reckoned as just “1” (without the quotes), not “C001.”

I must come back to add, this plugin works, and I am very thankful.

The only flaw I saw, was that the giving progress meter (a thermometer type graphic) could not be used with my theme because it added the meter twice, including hugely problematic appearance at the top of my site, above the header graphics.

I was concerned with “how will the PayPal site update the giving info (total given) on my site, unless I edit an IPN setting on PayPal?” However, either IPN settings on PayPal were already set, or they did not need set. The next time I visit the campaign’s page, the total was there, reflecting the donation I had just made! Kudos!

One other note: the plugin’s allowance of a field for “would you [the donor] like to remain anonymous?” does not work for me. The field never showed on the campaign page, and the test donation I made seems to have been classed as anonymous even though I was not provided any chance to choose yes or no.
