Calling Category Name

Is it possible to call the category name into the header? I’d like to have the name of the main category at the top of the page which changes when viewing posts from different categories. So if my header at the moment looks like this:

a href=”<?php echo get_settings(‘home’); ?>”><?php bloginfo(‘name’); ?>

Can it be changed to the category being viewed?
