That’s usually possible with a little CSS, but it would be easiest if you could provide a URL so we can figure out which rules need to be changed/tweakes/added to ??

Where would this custom.css file need to be stored? Directly in the plugins folder?

No – you should either follow your theme author’s advice for adding custom CSS (which might be via a child theme, but do check with them) or else follow the steps outlined in the Themer’s Guide I linked to above.

Essentially though you might end up with a stylesheet living here:

wp-content/themes/YOUR-THEME/tribe-events/tribe-events.css

And could add that code there.
