    Hello!

We had a pop-up that we deactivated about 2 weeks ago, but we recently discovered that it still appears even if we:

    • Deleted the pop-up;
    • Emptied all caches from W3 Total Cache (we don’t use Minify);
    • Deleted the cache and cookies from the browsers;
    • Finally, deactivated the plugin.

Did all that but the pop-up still appears, even though it’s basically impossible.

Here’s the site – https://unbanservice.com. Check it with any browser, especially Chrome, and hit Ctrl+F5. I’ve put some friends to do that and the pop-up appears, so it’s not a problem on my end.

    Looking forward to your reply!

  • Hi @broseph,

Thanks for posting on the forum.

The pop up should not get displayed when you deactivate it.

It seems the W3 Total Cache plugin is causing this issue.

Have you tried temporary deactivating the W3 Total Cache plugin?

If you are using any caching then please use the pop up loading method to “WordPress AJAX” as this is the best method to use with caching.

I checked your site https://unbanservice.com/ on chrome browser but didn’t get any pop up on it.

Is the pop up is removed now?

    Kind Regards,

Hello and thank you for the reply!

It does appear if you hit Ctrl+F5 or simply F5 (reload) after the site loads (sometimes it appears from the start). I’ve put a couple of friends to check it out again, and it appears, trust me. Here’s a screenshot as well – https://i.imgur.com/iP0c2Zi.png?1

It seems like W3 Total Cache is causing this, indeed. I deactivated it and the pop stopped appearing. I never thought that could be the issue because it doesn’t quite make sense, since the pop-up was deleted and the pop-up plugin deactivated.

Now, the thing is I can’t let W3 Total Cache deactivated because the loading time will increase, so I reactivated it and the pop-up reappeared.

I also removed/deleted the pop-up plugin, and the pop-up didn’t appear anymore. If I reinstall it, it appears again, either it’s activated or deactivated. Right now, the pop-up plugin is installed, but deactivated, so you can check things out. The pop-up appears now.

The pop-up is set to WordPress AJAX, but that’s irrelevant, since the plugin is deactivated.

Bottom line, we either need to find out what part of W3 Total Cache is causing this, or delete the plugin every time we stop using a pop-up. I’m also afraid that at some point there could be two pop-ups that appear or something, if this one won’t go away…

    Looking forward to your reply!

Update: I have deleted the pop-up plugin now because we can’t risk it anymore, since that pop-up offered a discount coupon that isn’t available for over 3 weeks. Our customers might think we are tricking them or something.

You have that screenshot above as proof that it did appear. Also, when I analyzed the site with Google’s PageSpeed Insights, the pop-up appeared in their preview – https://i.imgur.com/V7UMQ2S.png.

Right now it doesn’t appear because, like I said, I deleted it. That’s one of the two ways to make it disappear. The other option is to deactivate W3 Total Cache, which won’t happen.

I’ve noticed, though, that if I delete the pop-up plugin and then reinstall it, everything is the way it was, settings and everything, so I think that some information is still saved somewhere, even if the pop-up plugin is deleted. Maybe that’s why the old pop-up keeps appearing even if I delete and then reinstall the plugin.

    Hi @broseph,

I have tested on my test site using W3 Total Cache and pop up plugins and found the pop up is working fine using WordPress AJAX pop up loading method.

The pop-up is set to WordPress AJAX, but that’s irrelevant, since the plugin is deactivated.

Which pop up loading method were you using before deactivating the pop up plugin?

    Hello!

Used the WordPress AJAX method. Tried the other methods as well.

Another thing with pop-ups is that they keep appearing even if they are set not to appear after a user closes it. A lot of people are having this issue with different pop-ups and caching plugins (not just W3).

Had this issue myself on both my sites, with your plugin and another one. There has to be a way to stop caching plugins interfering with pop-ups.

Since the caching plugins cache versions of the site, the pop will show regardless of the cookies.

For example, I ticked Don’t cache front page in W3, and the pop-up stopped appearing there when I refreshed the page.

So, as long as there’s a caching plugin, the pop-ups won’t work properly. In most cases at least…

Anyway, back to our main topic. Kind of deviated from the subject there a bit :).

Is it normal that when I reinstall the WordPress Pop-Up plugin, everything appears the way it was, settings and pop-ups created?

For example, the pop-up plugin has been deleted for 2 days, but if I reinstall it now, everything will be there: the last pop-up I created (not the one that keeps appearing) and its content, the settings I had… Shouldn’t all that go away after I delete the plugin?

    Hi @broseph,

Thank you for your detailed reply.

We couldn’t reproduce the issue yet using W3 Total Cache plugin but we’ll do more troubleshooting to resolve this issue.

Would you mind if I logged in to your site and did some testing? This might help get to the bottom of this faster. If this is ok, just send log in info on the email id [email protected]
    – Include my name in the subject “Vinod Dalvi”
    – Include the URL of this post in your message so that I may track this issue better
    – Include login information (WordPress admin info username + password )

If you uninstall/delete the WordPress Pop-Up plugin then the pop up content, settings are preserved in the database so it becomes available for you when you activate the plugin again.

In short when you reinstall the WordPress Pop-Up plugin, everything appears the way it was, settings and pop-ups created.

    Hi @broseph,

Thank you for sending us the details.

I have tested it on your site https://unbanservice.com installing/activating the pop up plugin and clearing browser cache pressing F5 and Ctrl+F5 on visiting your site but didn’t get any pop up.

    Could you please test it?

When testing please clear browser cache and if you can please test it on other system.

    (@broseph)

Hello and thanks for testing it.

Unfortunately, it’s still there. I’ve tested it from a laptop this time, not my PC – https://i.imgur.com/xCPaVaY.png. I used Internet Explorer, Mozilla and Chrome, and deleted all the cache, cookies, temp files… you name it.

I just went to the Homepage, then went to the Order page, then back to Homepage, and boom! It appeared. So I didn’t even had to press F5 or CTRL + F5 to make it appear. Just browsed a little and went back to the Homepage.

I also asked some friends to check it again, and they said it does appear.

I deleted the plugin now, because that’s the only way to make it stop appearing. That or deactivating W3 Total Cache, which is not an option.

Think I’ll just stop using pop-ups on this site as well. Like I said in the other thread, even though we can find a fix for this, there will still be an issue caused by W3 Total Cache, which makes pop-ups appear over and over again, no matter how the cookies are set, because it caches the pages along with the pop-up itself.

    Hi Broseph,

I’m the developer in charge of the PopUp plugin and just was made aware of your issues.
These things are really strange, I have not heared of or seen such aggressive caching before…

    A) You say that the Popup appear, even when the plugin is not even activated. This means that some other plugin is serving the cached website (I guess you already figured that). Do you have memcache enabled on that server?

    B) Try to change some W3 options:
1- Page Cache: Add “*admin*” and “*ajax.php” to the “Never cache the following pages”
(This will make sure WordPress Ajax calls are not cached)
2- Object Cache: Add “inc_popup” to “Non-persistent groups”
(This will make sure that PopUps are not cached)

Now test again if the issues still persist.
If they do then please continue with these steps:

    C) Changing the W3 settings did not solve the issue; I assume that the PopUp plugin is deleted:
1- First enable the Debugging options in Performance > General Settings (box “Debug”)
2- Install the PopUp plugin again, keep it deactivated
3- Check your Front page, reload it a few times. If the PopUp appears then please save the page source and send it via email to Vinod or use the contact form (see above)
4- Only if a PopUp shows up: *Don’t delete* the plugin but using FTP rename the plugin directory form “wordpress-popup” to “popup-plugin” or anything else (it’s in the folder wp-contents/plugins/)
5- After this reload your Front page a few times. Does the PopUp appear now? (If the PopUp appears please save the HTML source and send us the file via email)
6- If the PopUp does not appear then please actiavte the plugin again and repeat step 5.
7- Still no PopUp on the Front page: Continue with point D.

    D) So far you should have the PopUp plugin active but no popup is displayed on the front page.
1- Create a new page on your website, for example https://unbanservice.com/popup/
2- Make sure the “Loading Method” in PopUp > Settings is set to “WordPress Ajax”
3- Create a new PopUp and *before you save it* add the rule “On specific URL: unbanservice.com/popup/” and activate the PopUp. Just enter any popup content…
4- Test the Front page again (step B.5) – if the Popup appears send us the page source…
5- If the PopUp does NOT appear on the front page then open the page you created in step D.1, you should see the PopUp here.

    – Now we can debug the demo page you created without interfering with your other pages and visitors –

Remember to disable the debugging mode again (C.1)

I hope this helps us to find out what’s going on here…
Thanks for your help so far and sorry for the inconvenience. Philipp

    (@broseph)

Hello and thank you for your in-depth and comprehensive guidance!

We always bump into strange issues. Happened on almost every website we worked on ??

    A) There’s no memcache on the server. I asked the support.

    B)

    1. Added “*admin*” and “*ajax.php”, but the issue remained.
    2. We don’t use Object Cache, but I still added “inc_popup’ :). The issue, of course, remained.

Deleted the W3 and browser cache before checking.

    C)

    1. Deleted the plugin.
    2. Enabled the Debug.
    3. Installed the plugin and kept it deactivated.
    4. Checked the front page and the pop-up didn’t appear anymore!
    5. I activated the plugin and the pop-up still didn’t appear.

    D)

    1. Created the page: https://unbanservice.com/popup-test/.
    2. The loading method is “WordPress Ajax”.
    3. Created a pop-up, added the rule, activated it, and saved it.
    4. Checked the front page and the pop-up still didn’t appear.

Now, the thing is that the pop-up reappears on the front page if I disable the Debug.

So, since I can’t let the Debug on for a long time because it’s not recommended and the performance won’t be optimal, I’ll have to delete the plugin again.

I sent the admin credentials to Vinod already, so if you guys wish, feel free to log in, install the plugin, and check things out with the Debug and demo page. I’ll leave the demo page there.

Or just tell me what can I do further.

    Thanks!

I have just tested the Pop-up plugin on your website and neither me nor Vinod could find a problem… Maybe there is some caching/etc on your local computer, or a proxy that serves cached pages?

    What I did:
    – Install the plugin “WordPress PopUp” from the wordpress plugin repository
    [OK: Frontpage/Testpage no popup]
    – Activate the plugin
[OK: Frontpage no popup/Testpage has popup]
    – Clear page cache in W3 plugin
[OK: Frontpage no popup/Testpage has popup]
    – We checked many pages on your website, none of then displayed a popup, except the intended testpage
    – Deactivate the plugin
    [OK: Frontpage/Testpage no popup]
    – Deleted the plugin again

So every step showed us the correct results…
If you still experience the caching issues then I recommend to play with the Minify-Settings of the W3 plugins (Menu: Performance > Minify). Possibly some minfied file contains old data. Try to
    – disable JS minification, or
    – set it to “Combine only”
    – change the embed types
    – add the popup-js file to the “Never minify these JS files”
    wp-content/plugins/wordpress-popup/js/public.min.js
    wp-content/plugins/wordpress-popup/js/public.js
    wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
(I’m not sure if you’re supposed to enter the full path, an URL or only filename into this field…)
    – Via FTP delete all cached data of your website:
Delete all files/folders inside directory /wp-content/cache

Also ask other people to have a look at the page to find out if they see the page correctly.

I hope this feedback helps you to solve that issue on your website ??
    Philipp

Good to see a comprehensive approach to issues, well done guys. Now where do I get the pro version.
