Bulk smush does not appear to be working

    It appears as if Bulk Smush is not working on my website.

    I go to my dashboard and ask to check for images that need to be smushed. It tells me that 43 images need to be smushed, so I start the Bulk Smush process. The process goes smoothly (with a few random errors with images lacking alt tags, which I fixed), and 20 minutes or so later it tells me that 43 images have been smushed and all is well. But I then refresh the page and click “recheck images,” and it shows me the same message again: “You have 43 attachments that need re-compressing.” I try Bulk Smushing them again, once again the process goes smooth, yet the problem persists.

    I’ve checked the images manually and sure enough they have not been smushed, despite the appearance of no errors occurring.

    Does anyone have an idea what could be going on? I’ve checked all over my dashboard and see no indication of any errors occurring or anything being faulty. The plugin was working just fine a few weeks ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I hope you are doing well!

    Please let us know what is the current image size, of a non-optimized image? if it is larger than 5MB, I’m afraid the free version of Smush plugin can’t optimize images this large.

    If the issue still persists, please run a test for a conflict with another plugin.
    – Deactivate all plugins besides Smush an optimize one image.
    – If the image is optimized, activate one plugin at a time, each time testing if images will be optimized.

    This way you will find which plugin is causing this.

    Most images are now > 5MB, so this is not a useful plugin any longer.
    Is this a new limitation? Seemed to work before.

    Follow up question:
    When uploading, my setting for “Resize my full size images” is set to 2560×2560
    and yet the original image is for example still 5.8MB
    The images look like the following example
    VFAL-withsauce-YYYYxZZZZ.jpg, (several different sizes)
    VFAL-withsauce-2048×1536.jpg, 393kB
    VFAL-withsauce-scaled.jpg, 631kB, (2560×1920)
    VFAL-withsauce.jpg, 5.8MB, (4320×3240)
    Shouldn’t the last filename be replaced with the “scaled” one? Since the original is no longer needed.

    This is a new thing with WordPress 5.3.
    VFAL-withsauce.jpg – this is the “original” original (doesn’t look like it’s used anywhere, besides generating attachment sizes). But I recommend you keep it.
    VFAL-withsauce-scaled.jpg – sine WordPress 5.3 this is the new original. It’s shown in the media library, and this is what is referred to as an original (full size).
    Everything else is the attachment sizes.

    I hope you are doing well!

    The limitation in Smush free version was 1MB and we have increased it to 5MB. This limitation applies to the thumbnail images created from an original image. Thumbnail images not supposed to be larger than 5MB. Feel free to try a premium version of the plugin for a trial period that has no limitation and it is optimizing original images as well.

    very good reply.
    So why not have a checkbox to remove the original image, since most of us have a copy anyhow. It is a lot of work to remove all these by hand.

    We’re looking at making this happen. Just need to make sure that the original image is not planned for something else. Once we’re sure it’s safe to remove them, we’ll add the feature in.

    And, please do create a new thread for your questions, so we don’t spam the original topic author.
