Hi, I had hundreds of cron jobs (single event) piled up after discovering wp_cron had been disabled. After installing plugin, I selected all single event items, then chose the bulk action of remove. The gears started spinning I started getting the individual pop-up notifications that tasks had been removed…I was so happy. Until all had completed and I went over to the show all tab and found that all of them were still there. I refreshed browser on the off chance it was showing me previous data, but nope, all single event jobs are still there. Tried again, no luck.

    Am I doing something wrong??

    Hi @pessimisticoptimist,

that’s the often case that plugin which added these tasks is checking if they are in the Cron scheduler and if not – adds them again. I’m afraid that all these tasks are needed by this plugin to work and if you want to get rid of them you have to disable the plugin first.

Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s the issue: I did disable the plugin before I tried removing the cron events for it. It does seem to delete 2-3 each time I try to bulk remove, but that isn’t really much more helpful than deleting one at a time manually…

As an example, I’ve recorded a video of me trying to bulk delete cron events in queue for the Wordfence plugin. You can view it here: https://youtu.be/Vvm8QTCYc7A

Also, the oldest of the cron events that I was trying to delete were from June (I used WP-Crontrol to view specific info.) After removing, the events from June were still there. If the plugin was adding new events back in, wouldn’t they be dated today?

(And I don’t know if it makes a difference, but the wp-cron is set to false. I’m trying to get rid of the hundreds of queued events before turning back on.)

Hmmm, you are right. Thanks for the video.

The ACM page definitely needs reloading after deleting the events. But why it’s removing only a few in bulk? I have no idea, but I’m just using WordPress core function to do it so there’s not much what can break.

I’ll test it against the iThemes security and let you know.

Thanks for your help in troubleshooting. I wanted you to know there is no urgency, I was able to solve my problem with another method.

(If anyone else comes to this thread, I want to share that I was able to delete in bulk via phpMyAdmin using the information in this article: https://www.timlinden.com/how-to-delete-thousands-of-crons-in-wordpress/
Of course, I’m comfortable working in the database, so I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who isn’t!)

Thanks again, Kuba, I do appreciate how promptly you responded to requests for help!

Ok, thanks for sharing the way to fix it!

Also, to aid your troubleshooting, I should mention that it wasn’t just the Wordfence plugin’s events that wouldn’t bulk delete as shown in the video. I had the same issue not being able to delete sm_ping (Google XML sitemaps) and epc_purge_request (Endurance Page Cache) events. I only selected the Wordfence ones in the video to be able to demonstrate quickly that I was indeed disabling the plugin in question.
