Ran the Bulk Optimiser on first setup of the plugin, and noticed a couple images hadn’t been converted to webp format.

When I try to rerun the bulk optimiser it just hangs on “Stage 2, please wait.” with a spinner.

Any thoughts as to why this would be happening, running the latest version of the plugin. (Version 5.4.0)

If you have several folders setup in the Folders to Optimize setting, it could take quite some time for Stage 2 to complete. If it doesn’t throw an error, it may not actually be “hanging”.

But this article gives you some tips along with a video to show you how to see if it IS throwing an error or hanging: https://docs.ewww.io/article/39-bulk-optimizer-failure (you can do the same thing in Chrome or Safari even though my example is in Firefox)

Hello, the same issue here. I updated today to Version 5.4.0, starting Bulk optimizer Stage 2, please wait .. spinning icon, nothing more ..

Any idea how to fix this, previous version of EWWW was for me working

    Best regards

Follow the article I posted and report any errors please (be as specific as possible, more than you think you need to be).

@letterafterz , a good way to narrow down possible problems would be to just select 2 or 3 images in the media library and use the “Bulk Actions” > “Bulk Optimizer” here instead of for the whole library.

Also (per the “The scanner is too slow!” section of the article @nosilver4u linked), check if your optimization history seems to be very large.

…and the reason I stopped by this thread is that I’m having the same experience:
    – Noticed that only the main image was now being converted to .webp, not the thumbnails (I only use this plugin for .webp conversion). Some thumbnail sizes also appear to never have been converted, but now it’s all of them.
    – Bulk optimization endlessly spins on Stage 2, even when only 2 base images are being converted. No console or logged errors.
    – Optimization history is <300 files overall.

@cembtw It would be good to see your debug info, you can send it via https://ewww.io/contact-us/
There may be settings active that are preventing WebP generation of thumbs.

That’s very interesting that it “sticks” when you select 2 or 3 images though, because stage 2 doesn’t really do anything in such a scenario. It DOES get called, but it shouldn’t do anything other than return a 0 response.
That was enough to replicate it though, so I’ll dig into the matter and see what is going on.
As for the WebP issues, we can continue the conversation via email or on a separate thread. Let’s try to keep this on-topic for the OP.

Well, unless you folks are having an entirely different error, I can’t believe this has slipped through so long.
If stage 2 spins and spins forever, it means the plugin didn’t find anything that it hadn’t processed already. Per the dev console, if you inspect the response from the call to admin-ajax.php, the “ready” parameter should be 0. We have a handler for that case, but it’s nested inside of a condition that can’t fire when ready==0. Good grief…

Fix pushed to GitHub if anyone wants to grab it before the release next week: https://docs.ewww.io/article/73-update-from-github

Great thanks – can confirm that was the issue we were having.

I would echo this experience and will wait for the plugin to update. Great resource – thanks!

@letterafterz @sallyruchman @cembtw @fionavar Is the new version working for you or not?
