Bulk Edit: Title, Alt Tag, descripion and so on broken on &

Thanks for your report. I reproduced the problem you reported in MLA v2.54, but I believe it has been fixed in MLA v2.60 which I released last night. I ran some tests in both versions and The ampersand is working for me in the latest MLA version.

If you update to the latest version you should get the results you need. I am marking this topic resolved, but please update it if you have any problems or further questions regarding the fix in the new version. Thanks for your interest in the plugin.

Thanks for your question. I want to make sure I understand what you are asking about.

You wrote “names or titles of the file itself“. I understand that to mean you are asking about a way to change the file name for a Media library item; is that right?

If so, I regret that the current version of MLA does not contain any features that will let you change the actual name of the file associated with a Media Library item.

The file name is stored in several different database locations, and if you insert the item in a post or page the file name is stored in the content of the post or page containing the insert. Also, when WordPress generates additional files for the “intermediate sizes” of the item the name becomes part of each intermediate size file name.

Because of the complexity of the task and potential risks of modifying file name or content I decided not to add those features to MLA.

If I have not understood your question, any additional information you can provide would be helpful. If you are asking about a file name modification, you will have to find a solution elsewhere. Thanks for your interest in MLA.

Thanks for your update and for clarifying your question. Now I understand that you want to populate the ALT Text field of your items with the name of the file attached to the item; I hope that’s right. If so, there are two ways you can use MLA to do that. Both ways use a “Content Template” to compose a value from the many “Field-level data sources” that are part of the “Field-level Substitution Parameters”. Your specific question is about the file name, but you can use a Content Template to create a value from more than one field, add labels to the value and use other functions. You can find more information in the Settings/Media Library Assistant Documentation tab.

First, you can use the Bulk Edit area on the Media/Assistant admin submenu:

1. Go to the Media/Assistant submenu.
2. Click the checkbox next to the images you want to change.
3. Select “Edit” from the “Bulk Actions” dropdown above the checkboxes and click “Apply” to open the Bulk Edit area.
4. Enter template:[+file_name+] in the ALT Text field (right-hand column).
5. Click “Update” in the lower-right corner of the area.

Second, you can define an IPTC/EXIF mapping rule to change ALL of your items at once. The following instructions assume you have the latest MLA version (v2.60), which has a new layout for the IPTC/EXIF tab::

1. Go to the Settings/Media Library Assistant IPTC/EXIF tab.
2. If you want to apply the rule to new items as they are uploaded, check the “Enable IPTC/EXIF Mapping when adding new media” and “Enable IPTC/EXIF Mapping when updating media metadata” boxes. Click “Save Changes” to apply your new settings.
3. Locate the “ALT Text” entry in the table on the right-hand side of the screen and move your mouse pointer over the “ALT Text” name to reveal the rollover actions.
4. Click the “Quick Edit” rollover action to open the rule Quick Edit area.
5. In the “IPTC Value” dropdown control leave the default “- None (select a value) -” in place.
6. In the “EXIF/Template Value” text box enter template:[+file_name+].
7. In the “Priority” dropdown, select “EXIF”.
8. In the “Existing Text” dropdown, select “Replace”.
9. In the “Status” dropdown, select “Active”.
10. Click the “Update” button to save your changes.

Once you define the rule you can apply it to a single image, multiple images or all images:

• To map a single image, go to the Media/Assistant submenu and click the thumbnail of the image you want (or click the “Edit” rollover action) to get the Media/Edit Media screen. You can click the “Map IPTC/EXIF metadata” link to run your rules on this image, then scroll down and look at the “Alternative Text” meta box to inspect the results.
• To map two or more images, go to the Media/Assistant submenu and click the checkbox next to the images you want. Then, select “Edit” from the “Bulk Actions” dropdown above the checkboxes and click “Apply” to open the Bulk Edit area. Click the “Map IPTC/EXIF metadata” button to run your rules on the selected images.
• To map all of your images, stay on the Settings/Media Library Assistant IPTC/EXIF tab and click the “Execute” rollover action for the ALT Text rule. This may take a while.
  If this is a one-time project, don’t forget to remove the mapping rule when you’re done. You can hover over the ALT Text rule and click the “Delete Permanently” action to remove your template and restore the default settings.
