• I have an existing website

I am building a replacement website using a unique IP on a different server. I need the current website up and running until the new site is complete.

Since I am building the NEW site on a different server using a unique IP – will I be able to change the ip under the Site Name and Site URL to my current sites domain name – once the new site is done? Once I enter the real url (current site) – will the domain name reflect on the links/urls?

    Thank you

  • Yes, you can do that. Most devleopers do that when they use a staging/development site before going live – the same way that you are.

Just be aware that there’s a few more steps in there than just changing those two values in the admin area.

Would it be the same as just building the site on a throwaway domain name – or is it better and easier to switch to the real domain name if building the site on an IP address?

    Thanks

    see last comment above

I am just worried that if I build an entire site on an IP – it will be difficult or cause url problems when switching to the real domain name.

Wondering if it would be better to build the site using the real domain name and just changing the hosts file.

What IP or domain/sub-domain/etc you build the site on isn’t a big deal. This can be changed using the resources that I gave above. If you want to be 100% sure and not go through that process you can also develop on the “live’ URL by modifying your hosts file. Both are no problems, but the only reason that you woudln’t use the hosts file method is if you need to share the site before it’s completed and live.
