    It seems this can be worked around by using a reference user.

    While I still think it’s an ugly way around the problem, it does simplify the admin interface in my case and I think I’ll go with it like this.

    I will leave this unresolved for now since I think some condition should to be implemented to avoid this situation altogether. Perhaps limit the number of languages a blog can be translated to per reference user, such that there are no duplicate languages. Throw an error and hint the administrator to create a new reference user, if multiple languages are needed in the current network.
