When I click onto page 2 of the gallery it’s showing this message

Fixed. I changed the ajax method to backend method (Advanced settings -> System -> I -> Item 5), and now it works again.

Some mechanism (Buddypress?) damaged the working of the by wp recommended method to do frontend ajax; i.e. by redirection.

Make sure no (security)plugin will prohibit the use of /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, because in that case we have a real problem.

I have enough info now, to find out where the js error comes from, so you can de-activate buddypress for the moment

It is a capacity issue, most likely a memry thing. I can provide a patch that may (?) fix it. I can install it if you permit me to do so.

Did not work yet, will look further tomorrow. De-activated buddypress

I found out that buddypress compresses and occasionally damages js code returned by frontend ajax calls. I will ask them how to switch that feature off.

The support seems not to be overenthousiastic, but at least i have proven what and when it goes wrong.

For the time being, the only workable situation is to disable frontend ajax, i.e. to set Advanced settings -> System -> I -> Item 5: ajax method to the 3rd choice: frontend none, backend backend. I changed it that way and uploaded a test photo afterwards, so that is still working.
