buddypress event results groups filter

Kind of new to developing (I know enough to be dangerous.) I am trying to limit returning events to events that belong to a users group.
I have referenced this tutorial, but not sure exactly where to implement this. https://wp-events-plugin.com/tutorials/create-your-own-event-scope/
Does anyone have any advice on where I can implement this to limit returned events on the events page to events that belong to groups the user is in? I am trying to avoid the user from having to comb through all of the groups events that they do not belong to. Is there an easier way to do this? I could see this being a necessary option for anyone trying to incorporate with buddypress.
FYI I am using wp 4.1 and bp 2.1.
