Buddy Press members don’t become WP Users

    Using WP multi site 3.1 and BuddyPress 1.28 as a secondary install I am finding that users registering for BuddyPress are not registered as users of WP for that site, i.e. they are listed in the BP members list but not in the users list brought up through the admin panel for that site. I wanted all members to have contributor status and to be able to submit posts but they seem to have no status at all. I have anybody can register set and for registrants to enter at contributor level and I have BP to WP profile syncing enabled. Is this what is meant to be happening or is there something wrong? At the BP support forum I am told it could be 3.1 admin UI issue.
