brute force attacks

In order to prevent brute force attacks on my site, I wish to password protect the wp-admin folder. However, when I do this, a pop-up (asking for username and password to gain access to the wp-admin folder) appears whenever a customer lands on the site. The pop-up should only appear when a user tries to go to the dashboard or admin section of the site.
Does anyone know if the plugin tries to access the wp-admin folder? And is there a way of turning this feature off?
