I try to add a function in my functions(dot)php file and got a white screen of death.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /home/powergen1/public_html/advancedmed.us/wp-content/themes/zerif-lite/functions.php on line 1314

I downloaded a fresh copy of the theme and uploaded a new functions file using FileZilla ftp. I continued to get the same error code.

I deleted the theme folder entirely…still the same error code.

I cleared all my browsers’ cache, tried different browsers, same error code.

Tried to change my theme to the default twentysixteen using myphpadmin in my cpanel and I still get the same error code. It’s still trying to load the functions file from the zerif-lite theme?!

I’ve deleted the entire theme folder, why is it still saying there’s an error code in that file?!

If anyone can help I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you!!!

Ok. I didn’t think this was theme specific. Also, since I’m using a free theme, I didn’t think I’d get support.

I see now they have a forum section on this board as well. I’ll leave my question there.

    Thank you.

You need a functions.php file, so deleting it was probably a bad choice.

How did you use cpanel to change a theme?

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /home/powergen1/public_html/advancedmed.us/wp-content/themes/zerif-lite/functions.php on line 1314

What did that file look like around line 1314?

Have you enabled wp_debug and wp_debug_log?

double-check that you are targeting the correct folder with FTP on your server.

I first deleted the theme folder because I read WordPress would default to the twentysixteen theme if you did that. Didn’t work. Then I couldn’t see why it could give me a parse error on a file that didn’t even exist anymore. And I may have been slightly frustrated and renamed the entire theme folder. ?? it didn’t help so I’ve since changed it back.

I change the theme in my cPanel by changing the name in the world-options table following these instructions.
    changing theme in Cpanel

I hadn’t enabled the debug because I knew exactly how it broke. I will do that.

    Thank you for your time.

PS-The functions(dot)php file ends at line 1312. I know I messed it up by trying to add code at the bottom.

I’ve been thinking a lot about your comment. I’m seeing the wordpress folders so doesn’t that imply I’m seeing the correct folder in the ftp?

Turns out I was FTP’ing to the wrong IP address. My domain was pointing to a different one. Never figured out why there were two but I pointed back to the IP I was using and now my changes are taking effect.

    @alchmyth you were right!

    Thanks guys!!
