• I’m hosting shitscared.net on my own Win2003 server under IIS6, running WordPress 1.5, PHP 5.03 and MySQL. Went to the page last night, and all the formatting is gone, it just has the posts there in basically a plain-text format.

I’ve tried restarting IIS and MySQL. I’ve restarted the whole server. I’ve installed PHP5.04 over the top of 5.03 (I’ve still got a copy of my original install). The only thing I was running non-standard was that I was running a different theme called Psycho, but that has been running OK for at least a month.

My knowledge of all this is quite limited, and it’s been doing what I wanted it to do (so far), so all I need to do is get it running again. Can anyone help with where to look to fix this?

I’m about ready to kill this thing. After I typed this post, it’s now working OK. It’s like it knew…. grrrrr

In case it happens again, can someone please let me know what they think would cause all the formatting to just drop like that? Also, when I clicked on the admin link, it just opened a blank page.

A few possibilities off the top of my head:

    Client side: Corrupted cache file.

Server side: Themes directory temporarily inaccessable (there’s a number of reasons this could happen, but transient events don’t make it easy to guess).

Network side: You’d be surprised by what problems can crop up when an ISP’s net link or a hosting server are overloaded with traffic. Actually, maybe you wouldn’t be surprised…

Wouldn’t you know, it was working before and now it ain’t. Not happy….

Thanks for the tips Kafkaesqui. I’m confident the problem is not the client side, because I’ve tried it on a couple of systems.

The themes directory is accessible, but I’m not 100% sure how to check if WordPress is accessing it properly.

It’s not a problem with the WAN, because I’m having the same problem when opening the page over my LAN.

It’s not to do with the browser, because Firefox is coming up with the same crap as IE.

I’ve just about had enough and am going to get drunk, so I’ll have to have a look tomorrow. Any more ideas on what to check gratefully accepted.

I don’t think this will help you at all with finding the problem, but it’s coming up for me now.

After all that, it was a problem with DNS. I have multiple domain names all pointing to this site, and I changed the site ID to another one during the week. Problem is, there was a problem with my DNS records for the other domain and they were pointing elsewhere.

So, when I opened shitscared.net it opened the page, but then the site was looking for the themes at the other domain, which the DNS entry was wrong.

So, Kafkaesqui, you were spot on when you said the themes directory wasn’t accessable. Thanks again for the help.

Yes, I did get quite drunk too…. ??
