• One of my clients just commented on this in an email, and I noticed the same thing a few days ago, that when you click on the “Break this series” link in an Event Details popup in the Calendar View, you are returned to the Calendar View of the current month instead of going to the Edit Event page for that newly created single event.

Has EO always worked this way? I don’t have any older installs of EO anymore, so I can’t go back and check, but I seem to remember that clicking on “Break this series” would break that event occurrence out of the series and take you to the Edit Event page for that new event. If it didn’t, is it possible that it could do this?

I can see someone (myself?) breaking an instance of a reoccurring event out of a series several months in the future, being returned to the current month, and wondering what, if anything, just happened.

If it isn’t technically possible for this to work that’s understandable, but if it could work this way I think the user experience would be improved.

This has always been the case. A message should also indicate that an event has been split. Also, since 1.7 the calendar ‘remembers’ (for about 5 minutes) the view (month/week/day) and date being viewed – so after breaking an event two months in the future, the user should be returned to the calendar with the date two months in the future.

Technically its possible, but I had entertained the idea of doing the opposite: when an event is created, return to the calendar not the event admin page. This would be coupled with improved event editing features (being able to drag ‘n’ drop events, edit event details etc.) from the calendar page.

The idea is that calendar is far better suited to event management – particularly when managing events. Improved event editing and returning to the calendar page would hopefully encourage users to use the calendar more.

But I’m really open to feedback on this. Much of the UI is based on my interpretation of what would make sense and I receive only limited feedback on how users actually use it!

Thought I’d revisit this thread with some feedback after helping several clients with their events over the past couple months. Both are using current versions of WP and EO.

One thing I’ve noticed is that on the admin Calendar View, when I delete an occurrence or break a series the calendar view goes back one month from the month I was viewing. So if I do this today (May 7) for an event in May, the calendar view reverts to April when it refreshes, even though April is finished already.

I tried this again just now with a ‘test’ future recurring event set for five days in November. Each time I broke the series or deleted an occurrence the calendar view went back one month to October.

Regarding ‘breaking the event’ actually taking you to the Edit Event page instead of leaving you in the Calendar View (one month back…), what if this were an option in Event Organiser settings? I realize the downside of that is bloating the plugin with too many options, but for usability it could be a good option to have available.

I see what you’re saying about using Calendar View for most of the admin workflow, as it’s much easier to see your events in a logical view, and being able to break a series or delete an occurrence from the calendar works really well.

Still, I’d really like to see being able to go directly to the event edit page after breaking a series, since the reason I’d be breaking a series would be to edit that particular occurrence.

That’s a good point. Opening an issue for this on Github in case I forget. (https://github.com/stephenharris/Event-Organiser/issues/86)

Also, ending up 1 month behind is a bug. But its not one I’ve been able to replicate…
