Breadcrumps choosing category alphabetically?

  • Hi there. I implemented the Yoast breadcrumbs and everything work except for one detail…

    When I post in multiple categories, for example Featured AND Category X it will chose one of these categories.

    I have had the same “issue” with the wordpress permalinks. I was able to “fix” that by giving the featured category the highest ID (permalinks were sorted on ID).

    Unfortunately it appears breadcrumbs are sorting Alphabetically, not on ID. So if I post in category Cars and Featured it will show Cars. If I post in category Guide and Featured it will show Featured.

    Has anyone found a way to “fix” this problem? If I post in two categories it is always because the item is featured. So ID sorting would totally fix this. I just could not find how to do this.

    I am still looking for a solution to this problem. Anyone have any ideas on how to possibly pull it from the canonical link?

    “If you do breadcrumbs, we will currently pick the first one,” says Matt Cutts. “So I would try to get things in the right category or hierarchy as much as you can.”

    This is actually the first time Google has stated that it chooses the first breadcrumb. In their current breadcrumb documentation for rich snippets, it simply states “Pages can have more than one breadcrumb trail.” There is no mention about Google currently using the first one and not using the rest of the breadcrumbs.

    “If an item does belong to multiple areas within your hierarchy, it is possible to go ahead and have multiple breadcrumbs on the page, and that can, in some circumstances, help Googlebot understand a little bit more about the site,” Cutts said. “Don’t worry about it if it only fits in one, or you’ve only got breadcrumbs for one, that’s the way most people do it, that’s the normal way to do it, and we encourage it.”
