Breadcrumbs on Home Page for every post?

I’m trying to display a breadcrumb for every blog post in my home page, not just in the single posts. I find that when trying to do so the breadcrumb shows only “home” since that’s where the viewer currently is, rather than where they post currently resides.

Is there a way to modify the function <?php the_category(‘, ‘) ?> to show a breadcrumb instead of the single category it has been listed under?
