• I am a brand new user to WordPress and I would love to get some hands-on help with getting started.

My new office is in Granite Bay, CA – located in the Sacramento Valley Region.

The WordPress book that I am reading says that there are users who are hoping to help “the next person who comes along”. Well, I am that next person and I am humbly, please, calling for help.

macmanx – I chose to stick with GoDaddy for now until I get the hang of the WordPress software. I’m using WordPress 2.9.2 and I am running the “sliding doors” theme.

From here, I’m needing help with making all of the pages have the sliding door look like the parent page. According to, < https://mac-host.com/support/ > I need the ‘page links to’ plugin. Is it that simple? Or does it get complicated from here?

    P.S. What does this mean:

Warning: Wrong parameter count for preg_replace() in /home/content/g/w/9/gw916/html/test/wp-content/themes/sliding-door/functions.php on line 10

As soon as I changed the theme from the default to Sliding Doors, this message appears at the top of the page.

Not sure, but this might be a good place to start:

justbishop – very cool, I’m looking at:

and this seems like it may work. I’ll keep you posted

    Thanks!

Hey kjolson! Welcome to the WP community. WP can do anything you want which is overwhelming at times. The community can really help you get started so just ask away

    kjolson,
Fistly, welcome to WP. If you have some previous HTML / XHTML, CSS experience it will help allot. As far as WP itself, I did have some hands on in an informal class which got the ball rolling. I then got the book “WordPress for Dummies” by Lisa Sabin-Wilson and took the time to learn it, which in a good investment in time. For the rest of it, the WP community ie. these forums are a wealth of information. The proof is the amount of responses you just got.
    Good Luck.

OMGIrene – thanks for the welcome. Today, I’m debating whether or not I should upgrade to WP 3.0 with the sliding door theme. I wonder if it will fix the error message I mentioned in my post:

    P.S. What does this mean:

leadsa – Thanks again. I love it how we all are so helpful on these forums. My brother said the same thing about learning HTML / HXTML, CSS. Are there any classes you recommend? Where are they taught?

As far as WP for dummies, I am SUPER happy to tell you that I have already begun doing some “book work” out of the 2nd edition. Today, I just got started on Chapter 6, which is in part 3, and that section is dedicated to “Self-Hosting with WP.org”. Finally, I am ready to start working on my employer’s WP.org test site and start applying all of the lessons that I learned manipulating my personal WP.com account.

P.S. I totally agree with you that taking the time to study the book it is a good investment of time. And yes, I love the amount of responses I have received.

kjolson: yeah, I’ve had to ask my host to update things before. It’s pretty frustrating because it seems like something that should be done already.

As for learning HTML/CSS, I’ve always found a combo of th W3 Schools site and simple experimentation to be the best way. Maybe consider opening your own hosting account somewhere and setting up a personal install of WP to just kinda go crazy and explore with? Good luck, and have fun!

Oh, a tip for you (non-wordpress). I have found it very frustrating and a long painful lesson if your host is using Micro Soft IIS servers. I had to do a site with NO say as to what host we’d use and got stuck using that!
Re: HTML / XHTML & CSS… I went to a local collage for that 10 years ago and had to hand code everything manually in “note pad” of all things. It was a great exercise, one which to this day still reaps rewards.
BTW, WordPress is a global community. For instance I am in eastern Canada. Talk about a global village….

Leadsa – Which informal WP class did you take that got the ball rolling? I emailed my host to see if they use Micro Soft IIS servers. We’ll see.

justbishop – I upgraded my PHP to 5.x on my server and the error message went away. Also, I upgraded to WordPress 3.0 and the error message has not returned. Lastly, I went to https://w3schools.com and found a ton of FREE (very cool) Full Web Building Tutorials on programming languages but did not find anything on WordPress. Any other ideas?

The Codex is your best source of all things WordPress:

MacManX – I find the CODEX to be too difficult for me because I come up with more questions than answers. However, these forums are helping to “fill in the gaps”. Also, I am going to check out a “Beginning php” class today at a local college so we’ll see how that goes.

THEME FIX! (sliding doors) I upgraded my php version to 5.x on my host and the error went away. YES! ALSO, I upgraded to WP 3.0 and the error message has NOT returned.

    NEXT UP: PLUGIN questions.

    1) PAGE LINKS TO – returning to the question above: Is it as easy as adding that plugin in order to make all of the other pages look like the parent page? or Does it get more complicated from here.

P.S. It’s good to hear from you again, MacManX.

    Hi kjolson,

I like your enthusiasm. Have you checked out the videos at https://www.lynda.com ? Many of them are free and the ones on beginning CSS and PHP are excellent. Unfortunately, they don’t have any videos on www.remarpro.com.

    Good luck!

PAGE LINKS TO – returning to the question above: Is it as easy as adding that plugin in order to make all of the other pages look like the parent page? or Does it get more complicated from here.

If you’re talking about this plugin, I think you’re confused on the functionality. All this plugin does is redirect existing page slugs to external sites. It’s a simple way to include links to external sites within page menus for themes that have such a feature.

Unfortunately, they don’t have any videos on www.remarpro.com.

You can find some great WordPress-specific video tutorials at https://wordpress.tv/

The informal WP class I took was put on by a communications group leader. It was a one day in-house class for out communications group. Sorry, it wasn’t a general public thing. You could definitely see that those who knew HTML / CSS were miles ahead of the others who didn’t. We could fix things as we went along because we understood how the code worked behind the scenes.
Since then, I bought the WordPress for dummies book, lots of tutorials online and the help from this forum.
    Hope this helps.
