    Hello,

This is the story of what brings me here:

I wanted to have G+ comments on my blog, so I downloaded Comments Evolved for WordPress plugin. It led me to install Php 5.3 + because my previous configuration was at 5.2, which was not compatible with this plugin.

So I upgraded to 5.4 (single.ini) with my host, Bluehost.

Php.ini file was created by Bluehost, and it wrote the php handler information into the public .htaccess file that already existed which BPS had created.

I took the handler info from the top, deleted it and placed it under custom code in BPS to do the process over again.

Problem: When creating the secure htaccess file for WP-Admin, BPS times out (although it creates the file as I see it through FTP).

From this point forward, I cannot access BPS options through dashboard unless I remove the PHP handler information from the htaccess in my public Root…which consequentially makes Comments Evolved to stop working and remind me that it doesn’t detect php 5.3.

This is all very confusing to me and trust me I’ve searched and spent hours trying to find the right information.

The same thing happens if I have bluehost create a php 5.3 or cgi single.ini….makes no difference. same symptoms.

Any help is appreciated? I need to know how this is all related…but the above is all fact.

    Thank you!

or maybe I am misinterpreting what you are saying? Maybe you were saying that you tried these other things and were still seeing 504 errors on the BPS options page still/only?

This is kind of interesting so I will test this plugin and see what is up.

Right, sorry i should have expressed myself more clearly. I always talked about BPS options.php

Regarding Shortcode Exec PHP: I do not think this plugin causes the problem, but i can not rule it out because of lacking knowledge.
But i have got the impression like if something more fundamental causes the issue. There has been at least one other plugin which changed the rendering of the star rating view: There had been one additional yellow square and the WP Super Cache uninstallation message did not appear. But i do not remember which plugin revealed this behaviour …

I would like to point into some other direction: Without any other plugins enabled, only the upgrade link appears. After enabling BackWPup, the star rating is rendered as well as a notification about the disabled WP Super Cache which has been detected. Somehow enabling BackWPup causes the execution of BPS options.php to proceed at least a bit more, or to chose another codepath than before.

Yep, I do not think that another plugin is causing this issue. I guess BPS just does not work on your Host/website/server. Sorry.

Not any more. Is there a way to get 0.49.1 back to investigate this issue further? Maybe something during the upgrade process broke.

Edit: Looks like your earlier assumption is right and something with the server does not work properly. BackWPup just told me “name lookup timed out”.

You can download older versions of BPS by going to the Developers link below and downloading the zip file.

3 people have mentioned a similar issue out of 30,000+ people who have upgraded to BPS .49.2 so there does appear to be some sort of rare/isolated issue going on.

    Thank you.

I just edited by previous post, BackWPup complained about name look up problems. I intended to compare a previous backup with the current state. I am trying to investigate the server theory further, thank your for your help and patience.

Yep, no problem. And yeah typically a 504 Gateway Timeout is a Server issue. BPS does DNS checks on the System Info page so this could be a combo effect. Ie there is some sort of DNS Server issue going on with your Host and the BPS DNS check is hanging because of that issue.

Wow guys. I followed the entire convo as the emails came in over the weekend and couple of days.

I never solved this issue. Rather, I stopped looking into it because last week I had to migrate my website to another server anyway and that took my time because I did it manually and wanted to learn. Now it seems to simple.

Anyhow, this issue had me frsutrated but I was managing to live with it without the need to go into options, just as long as things were secure.

My new server runs 5.3 by default, only that I decided to forget about that G+ comments plugin called Comments Evolved because of this issue. I hope to be able to run disqus and keep BPS working for me.

Well actually, I did set it up and I am able to go into the options page without the plugin. I dont know if it’s because of the new server.

    Cheers

Are you saying that the BPS options page is now loading correctly?
Also did you move to a new Host or just to a new Server on the same Host?
And wasn’t your only issue that when you used this handler: AddHandler application/x-httpd-php54s .php that is the only time the BPS options page would not load correct?

    Thread Starter Jose C

    (@jcervantes28)

    1) Yes I can now access the BPS options correctly.

I moved to a new host entirely (Bluehost to A Small Orange).

My issue was that I couldn’t access BPS options whenever I moved to a higher version than my host default. At the time the default was PHP version for Bluehost was 5.2xxx so when I would go to cpanel to have it changed, they’d create a php.ini file in the root along with adding a php handler to my .htaccess. I would then remove that php handler from .htaccess and add it manually to BPS custom code then run the BPS process. I tried with PHP handler 5.3, 5.4 and 5.5 and they all resulted in the same error.

Now, with A Small Orange, I don’t need a physical php.ini in my folders because I’m using their default php, which is 5.3.15. I also removed the Comments Evolved for now..Haven’t tried to see if the same problems occur when I want to have those comments installed, though I would imagine I wouldn’t have a problem because that plugin requires PHP 5.3+ and since I already have it installed, I’d imagine it would just run.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Jose
