• I know a TON of you may disagree with my site, and that’s OK. I would appreciate your objective feedback on my site’s design – https://boycottgoogleads.com .

I would like to say WAY TO GO, WordPress!!!!!! I’m not new to making sites, but I am new to blogging. This program made blogging easy, and even addictive. Even if I eventually lose interest in my current site’s purpose, I’ll probably continue blogging with WordPress, somewhere.

    Take care,
    James

  • There is no “design” to comment on. You are using a previously released theme, “almost spring”. IMO, you are simply fishing for traffic.

Can I raise the BS flag?

You have done no changes to the Almost Spring theme, with the exception of the header, so what feedback would you desire?

And the header graphic was done with a free online service.

Sounds more like a cheap attempt to drive traffic to me.

How about giving a clear credit to WordPress? Yes, you’ve got a link to www.remarpro.com, but it’s customary (and polite) to display something somewhere (and not a tooltip) showing that your site runs on WP.

Beyond that, your design looks good…although, not to carp, but much of its appeal derives from your use of Google’s logo in your header. Personally, I don’t think you can have it both ways — if you want to criticize Google, then I don’t think you should ‘borrow’ their visual style.

As I said I am totally new to blogging (and esp. building sites based on blogs)…for the record I *have* edited the sidebar and the footer, in addition to the header. Regarding giving more credit to WordPress, would this best go under my recommended sites? Or do you mean a graphic (don’t want to get too cluttered)?

Regarding their logo style – I hadn’t thought of that, I’ll try and think of something better.

    Thanks so much,
    James

OK, the logo is still somewhat a knock-off of Google’s, but I think it’s different enough to add interest (used watercolor effect). Better?

    Thanks again,
    James

Try simply “reversing” the goog logo. Use PSP or whatever graphics prog you favor, and use “negative image” selection…. if you’re on about goog’s evil, that ought to be evocative….

[NOTE PLEASE! I don’t have any agenda for or against goog myself….]

Thanks for the idea – I did it, but it’s rather bold (maybe that’s not bad?). Not sure the Almost Spring matches that great now…any thoughts/suggestions on that?

(Still wondering about how to give due credit to WordPress, too…)

    Thanks!
    James

Customary and polite according to who? You? The whole purpose of GPL is freedom to do with as you wish. Insisting that credits (advertising) are publicised is not within the spirit of GPL software.

Most of us who visit here know that WordPress is great software but that doesn’t mean we should be compelled to “sing and dance” about it. The quality of the software is what has made it so popular, not the advertising.

Still wondering about how to give due credit to WordPress, too…

You’ve got the link in your Meta section. Not sure what else is expected.

Try “negative” on the other main colors. Almost Spring is “okay” colorwise, but wishy-washy really. Go for bold….

Yeah. Go for bold. Pick one of those colors from the header and put that on the body, then make the content area black, with the other colors as needed for titles etc….

Now THAT would be a statement.

    (@jemoore)

Doh! Editing the colors in Almost Spring…would that entail mastering CSS????????? (Something I’m *very* limited on.) I’ll head to the FAQs about editing themes, maybe it’s not as bad as I’m imagining. ??

Thanks much for the constructive feedback!
    James

James, if you get stuck, email me – vkaryl *at* bytehaven *dot* com. I’ll see what I can do to help.

Take a look at Patriotic. It’s a different color (dark red & Blur) version of Almost Spring.

The irony of hooopla comment is that in the site that links out of his name, there is simply the wordpress text link in his footer. No different than the OP.

You’ve got the link in your Meta section. Not sure what else is expected.

I guess I’d expect something that indicates the site is run on WP. I realize this isn’t required by GPL and I wasn’t talking about legalities. A “WordPress” link is good (as I said), but it doesn’t quite say that ‘this is a WordPress site’ the way that 99% of other WordPress sites do it (i.e., “Powered by WordPress” or something similar).
