    Hi,

    I’m using Newsletter 4.7.6.
I’d appreciate it if someone could please tell me how to see which email addresses bounce back or otherwise cannot be delivered.
I’m sending out about 200 emails and have only 30-60 emails opened.

    Thank you

  • Under “settings” you can add you email-address into the field “return path”.

Correct Andreas. Oden with a low subscriber number as you have you can easily set the return path (probably your provider is setting it differently from the sender email address) and on that address you’ll receive the delivery error messages.

Note that 60 opens on 200 contacts is a rather good open rate!

Thank you Andreas and Stefano for your reply. I have the “return path” set to my regular email address. It is the same email address that I have in WordPress > Settings > General > Email address. It has been set this way for a few years now and not once have I received a bounce notice. I’m thinking that’s rather suspicious.

Is there a way I can test bounced emails without sending an actual newsletter?

    Thank you

Send a test email to a fake address from the status panel and you should receive the delivery error (if your provider is not changing the return path). For example send an email to gmail using as user hagdfjsghdfgjshdf[at]gmail.com (hope it doesn’t exist!).

I tried sending a couple of such fake email addresses from the status panel. After each send I’m given the following message:
    Email sent with Newsletter: SUCCESS

    Something’s not right.

Delivery and bounce are two different things. Delivery is when you send a letter at post office, it usually is a success. But if the receiver is not reachable you get a notification, later, and this is the bounce.

The bounce is an email you should receive at your “return path” address for message you sent but cannot actually find an available mailbox.

    I understand.
Regardless, I have not received any messages of a bounced email sent to the email address that I have on the “return path”.

So, send me a test message at [email protected] so I can check the headers and see which is the return path.

Your return path is forced by your provider, you should ask them how to unlock that.

My provider created a new email for bounce purposes. The return path was changed accordingly. Now it works fine.
    Thank you for you help.
