Hello Marcin, Great plugin. Thank you for making it!

We recently updated to Version 3.0.0.1. Following this, certain users see a strange screen when browsing to the WordPress Dashboard. The user sees a blurred dashboard with all links frozen. It’s as if an advertising screen is trying to popup, but stalls.

I tried to hide this blurry issue with css, and found some luck with hiding tags entitled “wpmui-overlay”. Though the Dashboard is still very difficult to interact with.

This issue stops the affected user from being able to log out or interact with WordPress. The issue does not affect all users, seemingly just newly created users.

Thank you for your help with this.

  • Hello @mlscott

    Hope you’re doing well!

Please let me know, does it look like the image attach bellow?

If the popup is not visible from your end, mot likely there is a conflict with a plugin.

Would you please run a quick test for a conflict? Deactivate all other plugins, register a new user and test if the popup is showing up. If everything is well, activate one plugin at a time to find the one that causes this.

Let me know how it went!

    Kind regards,
    Nastia

I am having the same issue. However, there is no way to interact with the screen at all. I can’t access anything on the back end of my site. I can’t disable plugins, because none of the links work. There is no dialog box, just a blurred screen.

    Hello rharrisj,

I’m sorry to hear that you have those issues, but per WordPress forum regulations, please create a new thread and describe the issue you have.

You can disable plugins with FTP access or in cPanel file manager (if you have cPanel for your hosting account management). With FTP you can go to wp-content/plugins and there find folder of the plugin you want to disable and rename it. It will disable plugin instantly.

    kind regards,
    Kasia

    Hello rharrisj,
Personally, I feel your issue is exactly the same as mine. I welcome you to this thread.

FYI, after I started digging into this plugin, I realize that this issue is directly related to the plugin’s author trying to serve Ads to users within the WP-Admin. Picture Popup Ads from 3rd parties being displayed to you and the website’s admin users. While I’m always glad to help a plugin author troubleshoot actual functional issues with a plugin, I’m not willing to help them serve me Ads. I consider it a waste of time.

I hope the following helps you:
    1. I reverted the plugin to an older version, which didn’t have the Ads.
    2. I’ll be migrating this plugin over to a different Custom Sidebars plugin, one that does not serve Ads to me or my customers. There are plenty of alternatives.

While I respect this plugin author’s wish to monetize this plugin, I don’t feel serving me Ads are the way to do it. Just my personal preference. Also, serving 3rd party ads within the WP interface represents a security issue in my opinion.

Last, I subscribed to this comment section, and it does appear that this author is plugging fake plugin reviews to their plugin. Notice they are quite generic an lack authenticity.

@lhkjhjkhjkhjklhjklkhjlhjkl – Sorry to hear you are leaving. We do not have any 3rd party ads. If you are seeing third-party ads you may want to get that checked out. This plugin has no limitations from the pro version and only two ads that both points to WPMU DEV products. There is one banner ad that can be dismissed and one stagnate ad in the widget section.

@mlscott – Thank you for using Custom Sidebars. I am going to mark this topic resolved because we haven’t heard from you in awhile. If this issue was not resolved we can reopen it. Thanks again!

    Hello jdailey,
Actually @lhkjhjkhjkhjklhjklkhjlhjkl is me. I posted the above comment with the wrong account. Same advice to @rjharris though.

re: 3rd party Ads; as is stated in your plugin description: “If you run a design agency, or just want to get rid of the ads, checkout Custom Sidebars Pro” While I can’t actually see these supposed WPMU DEV Ads, because of a blurry dashboard, I would assume that you don’t own the WPMU DEV company, but do sell your plugins there. Thus, yes, they are third party ads.

@jdailey, I would suggest that you don’t mark this topic resolved, as two of us and counting have not actually resolved this issue. As stated, I’ll not be helping troubleshoot your ability to better serve me Ads, but do suggest to others that there are many other great Custom Sidebar plugins available.

Thank you for the reply! I have reopened the ticket. If you are unwilling to work with us to replicate the issue or provide us information about your setup we will not be able to find the conflict.

As for your recommendation to not follow the forum rules, we can not support that recommendation. In order for us to offer our plugins in the WordPress directory, we have to follow specific guidelines.

“If you run a design agency, or just want to get rid of the ads, checkout Custom Sidebars Pro”

This is in reference to our personal ads. We only have two of them in the dashboard and one of them is dismissible. WPMU DEV owns Custom Sidebars and donates countless hours to the support forms. I am one of the many staff that respond from WPMU DEV.

    I hope that helps.

Marked resolved after 3.0.2 as other similar issues were resolved. Thank you for the feedback.

    Hi,

I have the same issue. On some iPhones, when logging into Dashboard, the screen is blurry, nothing can be clicked on, but I can scroll up and down. The screen is normal for a fraction of a second before then turning blurry, as though there is a popup loading that is somehow hidden from view.

I found that the issue occurs with users that I make now, with the 3.0.4 version of the plugin installed. Users that were made previously (the plugin was already installed, but an earlier version) all work fine.

Deactivating the plugin fixes the problem, so it is this plugin for sure.

I’ve had to disable it for people to be able to login and work, looking forward to being able to use it again.

    Thanks!

Thanks Michael. Just forwarded to the developer.

Same problem, put in a ticket with my host. Site is totally disabled

Never heard back from dev so we changed to another plugin, totally happy with it. We do our own hosting, I can tell you it’s the plugin.

I too had this problem. I deleted the sidebar plugins folder via ftp. Now no issue. Off to find a different plugin!

    Hello @dillydally,

I’m sorry to hear that our plugin was not working on your site. I’m checking with plugin developer what is status of this issue and why this is showing back.

    kind regards,
    Kasia
