    Received an email notification from jetpack monitor that my site has been down. While common,the issue with this email is that it’s been down for an entire month.

    (Email message received from jetpack:)
    “Your total downtime was 1 month, but your site was up again as of Thursday, August 4, 2:08 pm.”

    Within 30 minutes of receiving that email I got another notification that my site is down again..still waiting to be notified when it’s back up.

    (Email received 22 mintues after the previous):
    “During our last check on Thursday, August 4, 2:29 pm, we noticed that your site was down.”</em
    >

    I haven’t launched yet but it causes me to worry, is this common?? I understand shared hosting means there will be down time but in the past its only been a few minutes/hours.

    So I started a chat with BlueHost tech & received the following:

    TECH: “Currently you are on basic shared with 1000’s of other sites. I would suggest you upgrade to a better server…”

    ME: “so it is possible my site could go down for a month’s time in the future once I launch on my current hosting plan?”

    TECH: “and there is no option to avoid the down time on your current hosting plan…”

    I’m already over budget by going the self hosted route & taking courses learning how to set it up myself…I cannot afford to upgrade my hosting for a blog I’m not even sure will have visitors. Does anyone else have recommendations or advice on this issue?

    I have been using bluehost shared hosting for several years on various websites and have not experienced extended outages.(Recently there was a server issue but did not impact the visitor experience on my website.)

    NOTE: For a mission critical, revenue generating website > consider using something other than shared hosting. Bluehost and other companies offer various levels of managed wordpress hosting.

    Sorry about the downtime. The site being down for 1 month, does not seem right. It might just be an issue within Jetpack for it reporting the site as being down, when it was not.

    @jessica_ppd

    Bluehost normally has really good uptime for shared hosting.

    Hi Jessica,

    My name is Jeremy, and I am one of the Jetpack plugin authors. I’d be happy to look into this some more, and work with Luke to see if we can find out more about the downtime.

    Could you post your site URL here, so I can have a look?

    If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via this contact form:

    Jessica,

    I just found this thread, where you mention one of your sites, perfectlypainteddesigns.com. Is that the site for which you received the downtime emails?

    I can see that the Jetpack monitoring agent receives an error when trying to access your home page. I believe the error might be caused by your maintenance plugin. Could you try to deactivate it, and let me know if you then receive a new email from Jetpack, to let you know your site is back up?

    Thanks!

    Yes my site is perfectlypainteddesigns.com You were right, the minute I deactivated my maintenance plugin I got an email that the site was back up! Thank you!! So the monitor is just running into an issue when I have that active, it doesn’t mean that my site is actually down, correct?

    @luke Cavanagh & @jeremy Herve Thank you guys for jumping on this and offering your assistance, I REALLY appreciate it! I was so worried!

    @jessica_ppd

    It was just that the monitor was showing the site as being down, due to the coming soon plugin that was active.

    Great, so relieved to know that! Thank you guys again for all your help and offering to work together and help me solve this- it’s so amazing to have easy access to such helpful people!!

    I also just noticed a VM on my cell from David @ Bluehost calling to make sure I received the notification about the maintenance plugin causing the outage and apologizing for the tech conversation & not to worry that my site will go down for a month in the future. I cannot tell you how much better I feel now…*wipes sweat off brow ;P

    @jessica_ppd

    Glad to know that everything is good to go now.

    Have a great weekend.
