/blog/page/2/ just returns the same page

  • I have a very odd problem. My new wordpress site is running twenty eleven and a child theme. It has a staic home page and a blog page. It all worked perfectly on the test server, but now it’s on the live server the’ next’ ‘previous’ links on the blog don’t work. But if you select a blog category, scroll down and use the ‘previous’ link on that page it works perfectly. I’ve tried disabling the plugins and the child theme and I still have the problem.

    WordPress is in a subfolder on the live site and it was in the root on the testing server. I’m wondering if there’s something there that would cause the blog not to be able to show the second page? Although everything else in the site works. I’ve been trying to track down the problem but I can’t find anything to suggest what’s wrong. Can anyone help?

  • Sounds like you have a custom query in your child theme’s index.php template file. What happens if you revert to the unedited parent theme?

    I have the same problem when I switch back to twenty eleven theme and remove all plugins. The child theme doesn’t have an index.php. I’m baffled.

    What happens when you reset your permalinks back to the defaults?

    I’ve tried changing the permalinks and saving them but still no change. So frustrating!

    I’m wrong! I had them the way the blog has always been (for years) and as I wanted them in the new site but I hadn’t tried the wp defaults. I just tried it and it works! Thank you esmi!

    So how do I get wp to use the permalinks I want to use. This must be an htaccess thing I’m guessing? I do have one in the root.

    Well having worked through everything I still have the same problem. I can reset the permalinks to use postname and they work perfectly all across the site, single posts, categories etc, everywhere except on the blog loop. The blog loop only works with the permalinks on default.

    the older posts link at the bottom of the page isn’t working, it loads the same page again.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.
