Like many others, I’m having difficulties with the Import feature to transfer my posts and comments from Blogger (not beta) to WP (2.0.4). I’ve read through the documentation and most of the threads here, without success.

The database and WP installation worked like a charm, and I’m able to create new posts without difficulty. But when I try the import, it seems to time out right near the end of the process, kicking me back to a blank page.

It usually (not always) completes all the first steps. At “Publishing with new template and options” it gets to “Files published 100%, moving on…”

I then get this message, but it continues working:

Operation timed out with 76900 out of -1 bytes received
    Importing Blogger archives into WordPress

    2006_07 0 post(s) parsed, 0 skipped… comment(s) parsed, 0 skipped… Done

    2006_08

    2006_09

On a couple of occasions it finishes this step. But then it alwyas times out and resets to the “log in to blogger” page

Resetting the importer yields the same results.

I’ve set Blogger to the recommended “backup” template, and each time it messes it up (“Try a better…”) I replace it. But still no dice.

Am I doing something wrong, or could this be an issue with my provider (NetFirms)? I’ve tried it over a 24 hour span, at home and at work, with IE and FF.

Any advice would be most appreciated. I’m just about out of ideas.

  • Some of us have had problems with our servers that we couldn’t easily resolve for whatever reason (usually due to host server restrictions).

If all else fails there is always the “import to a server running on your PC and copy the DB to your live server” approach.

I documented the steps that I took to do it as I was never able to import directly from Blogger to my hosted server.

Thanks, I may have to give that a try. It seems awfully complex for my minimal skills, but it beats losing my posts.

Well, turns out I just needed patience. I kept resetting the importer and trying again, and after dozens of tries it eventually made it all the way through. I guess it was just a timeout/communication issue, which shouldn’t have surprised me. Broken pipe errors between Blogger and my host were the reason I switched to WP in the first place.

I did run into some weirdness once the import was done. For some reason it would choose to “skip” whole sections of my archives – so I got just September and October the first and subsequent times. What solved it was changing the datestamp on some old posts to October (thanks, Greasemonkey!) and then running the import again. It grabbed most of them the next time. I changed the dates on a few more, then changed them back in WP, and everything’s spiffy.
