Blog Traffic Suddenly Drops

    We have been going strong with our Toronto-based WordPress blog for about 5 or 6 months now and had built up about 200-300 page views per day (according to both Google Analytics and the WordPress site stats). All of a sudden, our bounce rate skyrocketed from a consistent 20-30% right up to 140% in a matter of 10 days.

    At first I thought it was a problem with Google Analytics and I just put off fixing the problem, until our traffic went from over 200 visitors and page views each day to 40 or less. We have changed nothing about our site and the way we publicize it on social media, and we are still getting good engagement on our social media channels with people giving feedback about our posts.

    I only just upgraded to Version 3.9.2 today (had no idea what it was before but knew we were due for updates), and I updated Askimet, WordPress SEO and other valuable plugins.

    Is this an update issue, or is there something more serious going on with our website? I just have no idea how we would go from a regular audience that was constantly building day by day, to suddenly and QUICKLY dropping. Any help with this issue would be appreciated, I have already tried scouring the internet for answers.

  • How much of your traffic was from search engines? It’s possible they updated the algorithm and ranking of your website. If it was all or a majority from social media, then I’m not sure either.

    I’ve experienced the same thing and I believe it’s due to the new “wordpress reader” feature.

    Posts viewed in the reader will not show up in the statistics – unless they click and “view original”.

    Myself I’ve dropped from 300+ down to 100.
