Hello (apologies in advance for the length):

I could not attach a screen shot of my problem, but bottom line, my site was built from a theme by a developer and has been live for about 2 months. It has been crawled by Google and Bing.

When I type in the name of my website in the search bar (just using search terms, not www. or https), nothing comes up in the results. I understand that all of this can take a while through Google for sure.

However, with Bing, I think indexing must be working faster because you actually can find my site on Page 2. The problem is, the page that shows up in the result is NOT a home page, it is the “About” page.

When I went into the admin panel of my website, I only saw two pages: an About page, and a Privacy page.

I believe what should have been done is that the developer should have built out a separate Home page so that the search engines would land on that, correct? Why would search engines land on an About page instead of Home?

Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do this for fear I will break something. I do have a home page/menu bar that’s hard-coded in through the theme?, but the search results aren’t pulling it.

Is there an easy way to fix this?

My theme is Mediavine Trellis with the Bamboo child theme.

    Thank you for your time.

Wordpress doesn’t have anything to do with which of your pages are listed in the search engines. Google and Bing decide how and when they will list your site. Everyone wants to be at the top of the list. But, It takes time and patence to get there. Know one here can help you get better standings in the search engines. Best thing to do is to follow google guide lines keep your site updated and build back links to your site. If it a local site try localizing it with google. Sometimes it takes time and money to make it to the top.

I understand the dilemma with search engines. I’m not asking to be at the top, as I know that takes time.

What seems very illogical and makes no sense at all is that when my website is searched, it lands on the About page. I have enough content on this site so it doesn’t make sense why this is happening.

This just looks confusing and unprofessional and I’m stumped. I’ve got a menu section with “home” as an option so this really shouldn’t happen.

Your home page could be listed under other terms that you are not searching for. Google could also be listing your site below everything else because it doesn’t like it for some reason. Are you running analytics on your site? If so what is it telling you? It is not really a WordPress issue more of a marketing and SEO issue. Try adding a google search console to your site.

You have to do research and testing. Marketing going to consume more of your time than any other task.
