I manage a blog site (using CampusPress) for a center for teaching and learning at a public university. We use Jetpack to provide insight into which resources are most popular with our instructors. Like many other users in this forum, I noticed this week that Jetpack has automatically flagged our site as commercial and no longer allows us to access the free version of the plugin.

Our site does not fall into any of the outlined categories for commercial content — we don’t run ads, we’re not selling products/services, we are not a business, and we do not solicit donations. I was also unable to install the free version through the WordPress purchasing page as one user suggested (I get an error saying I do not have access to the requested resource; not sure if that is a limitation of CampusPress or my institution’s license restrictions). How do we appeal the commercial flag and restore access to the free version of Jetpack?

  • I have the same problem with my blog: winediplomats.com I have never once made any money from the website. I don’t have a related business. I don’t sell anything. I don’t advertise anything. I only give my honest opinion on products other people sell. I don’t ask for donations or sponsorship. As a wine review blog, I have received some offers for sponsorship which I have rejected or never been able to agree upon, and I do have a samples policy in case people want to offer me something to review. Bottom line, it is not my intention to make money from the site. It is a hobby. If someday it ever becomes popular enough that I could, then it could turn commercial. For the moment, it’s just a hobby.

Hello there – I have confirmed that your website is for non-commercial use only and therefore qualifies for our Free Stats plan. I have adjusted this in our records.

To use Jetpack Stats for non-commercial sites, please follow the flow on this page to certify that your site is non-commercial:

https://wordpress.com/stats/purchase and then check the boxes that apply to your site which make it non-commercial.

Let us know if you have other questions or if there’s anything else we can do to help!
