I changed from a WordPress.com hosted site to host my own site about 8 months ago or so (maybe less or more, time flies) and I’ve noticed a significant drop in views. I’m talking from like what it was before like 100+ a day to like 2 a day now. I went to self-hosted to have more customization to be able to grow my readership as it was growing on the WordPress.com hosted side.

After some digging today, I’ve noticed that my old blog posts from before the switch aren’t being indexed on Google and aren’t coming up. Like I have to literally type the exact name of the post with the name of my blog for it to show up, and even then it’s not the first result.

I didn’t purchase that redirecting package when I changed over because I was informed by a few sources that it wouldn’t necessarily be needed? Or maybe it was.

I have Google Analytics and such but not Search Console (I don’t think). Would that help it? How am I able have my old blog posts show up like they used to on the old site.

Thank you so much in advance and let me know if something isn’t clear!

You already have an XML sitemap, so that’s good: https://mylibrarycardworeout.com/sitemap.xml

The next step is to add your site to Google’s Webmaster Tools and provide that sitemap URL to them. I see you’re already using Jetpack, so just follow this guide: https://jetpack.com/support/site-verification-tools/

Once your site is added, you’ll be able to follow its progress in Google there.

    Hello,

Thank you very much for your response.

So I went to the site verification section and I’ve actually already done that. So I went to Google Console and it seems that stuff is coming through. But for some reason stuff isn’t showing up still??

Not sure what could be going on.

Doing a Google search on “site:mylibrarycardworeout.com” came up with 197 results. Not sure if it would affect it, but I did notice 3 different google-site-verification meta tags on the main page with different values. The post pages have 2 different tags with different values.

I’d double check and make sure that only 1 thing is generating the tag and that it’s the current value Google Webmaster Tools has.

Thank you very much for your response.

197 results, I’m guessing that is pages. Which is pretty low considering I have like 700+ posts up there. So I’ll need to figure that out.

And 3 google-site-verifications? How am I able to either delete some of them or edit/reset it?
When you say generating the tag, do you mean like tags on a post or….I’m not terribly computer savvy on the back end of this stuff.

    Thank you!

From your site’s source, Jetpack, Yoast SEO, and a third element that isn’t identifying itself are all adding a Google verification tag to your site.

You only need one of those, so I recommend that you start by deciding if you want Jetpack or Yoast SEO to add the tag. Since Yoast SEO does so much more, if it were me, I’d keep that in charge of all SEO things and delete the verification tag in Jetpack: https://jetpack.com/support/site-verification-tools/

Next, you’ll have to figure out whichever is the third one adding the tag. It could be another plugin or even a feature of your theme.

Okay, I have fixed one of them but one is still missing. So I will need to fix it.

I went to google search console to try and figure out where my old pages are and I have like 345 error codes, so 345 of my posts are 404 erroring.

When I transferred to self-hosting I didn’t set up the redirecting thing by paying for the service. Do you think that should be done? Or how can I go about fixing all of these posts. Would I need to go back into the posts on the back end and re-publish them all? Or is there an easier way?

I may need to call my host (HostGator) and see if it can be fixed from their side, if anyone thinks that might be better.

Was your site on WordPress.com using the same domain as your site now, or was it a plain [example].wordpress.com URL?

    Thread Starter mylibrarycardworeout

    (@mylibrarycardworeout)

Yeah, it was exactly the same. I just went from .wordpress.com to a .com.

    (@macmanx)

Ok, you won’t need a Site Redirect upgrade then, since you were using the same domain on the WordPress.com site.

But, the problem here is you didn’t keep the same permalink structure, hence the 404 errors. Different Permalink structure = different links = everything is redirecting to a 404 Not Found error.

Head over to Settings > Permalinks in your site’s Dashboard, select the “Month and name” structure and hit save. That will fix the problem.

Apologies for this delayed response. I have gone and done that to the permalinks. I remember when I transferred over, I did change something on that end, not realizing that it would change everything.

Does this mean that all of the new posts, since the transfer to the self-hosted site, need to have their links changed? Or will it automatically be done.

Thank you so much for your suggestion.

    (@macmanx)

The change will be automatically done once you select the “Month and name” structure and hit save at Settings > Permalinks in your site’s Dashboard.
