• I’m brand-new to using WordPress, a designer having built my site for me. Until now, when I uploaded a new blog, taking care to (1) check the box to classify the post as a blog, and (2) set off the text as a blockquote, all was well. But this time, while the new post has been successfully published (and can be accessed through its unique URL), it’s not showing up on the page that lists all my blog posts. The site is set up to feature the first paragraph of the most recent blog on the home page, and it, too, is not updating to show this new blog.

Interestingly, as long as I’m logged into the admin page, the main blog page and the home page *do* recognize and feature the new post. But as soon as I log out, the new one disappears and the previous post shows up.

    What am I doing wrong?

  • Just for clarity’s sake, ‘blog’ usually refers to the entire collection of posts, and ‘post’ of course is a single entry to that blog. Your developer may have included his/her own adaptation of those terms in your admin area, and if so, just keep the distinction in mind so there’s no confusion.

Since the page seems to have published OK, check the publication date for the post for correctness. Sometimes an incorrect date can cause a post to be omitted from the display of ‘recent posts’.

Thanks for your reply. There’s only one option to check (“blog”), and I did so. The pub. date is a reasonable suggestion, but that isn’t the issue here either; the date is recorded correctly.

A couple things. First, make sure that the ‘post’ wasn’t created as a ‘page’ by mistake. As it sounds like your developer has changed and/or restricted your admin options this seems unlikely. But if you have the ability in admin to view Pages > All Pages, see if the post is listed there instead of among Posts > All Posts.

Second, this could be a caching issue. Have you cleared your browser cache? Are you using a caching plugin? If so, clear its cache and try reloading the page.

There’s only one option to check (“blog”), and I did so.

Since you have a modified version of WP, you may get better answers from your developer, since we have no way to know what alterations have been made.

Very helpful, thanks. The post isn’t misclassified as a page, and I do clear my browser cache, but I think you may be onto something with clearing plugin caches. I just need to figure out how to do that…

Look in your plugins for a cache plugin. If you see one, there will probably be controls/settings for it in the admin side-panel. However, your developer may have such things hidden. What is your url?

Yes, there is a plugin installed called “W3 Total Cache.” I’m going to hope my designer can show me — or I can figure out — how to use it (since I’m not seeing an obvious “clear plugin caches now” button). Again, many thanks for your help.

You’re welcome. I hope that takes care of the issue for you. (Look under Tools or Settings for W3TC controls – I don’t use it so I’m not sure where you’ll see it.)

If it is the cache, you may find that it clears up on its own when the cache resets with new content.
