I’m trying to style the blog / posts page of my word press site. At first when I created the archive.php page the posts page started reading from it, then it defaulted back to reading from the index.php page. I couldn’t figure out how to set it to permanently read from the archive.php page – so I could add my classes and structure there and start styling.
Let me know if you have any tips. Thanks !

  • What theme are you using? Where did you download it from?

Hey Thanks for getting back. I’ve been building up my own theme from scratch.
This is my first trip into theme development, I’m very new to it, having fun so far.

Your main posts page will always use the index.php template file – not archive.php. Other than that, I’m not sure what you are trying to do.

Aha, Ok for some reason I thought it was best to set up the posts page as reading form archive.php. (Maybe that is if your site is going to have more than one post page?) My site only has one posts page, so seems like I can use the index.php to start creating my custom loop.

Yes – just start with index.php. That’s the one theme file that you cannot be without. It will not only control the main posts page but will also be used for category, tag and archive (posts sorted by date) pages if the relevant template file is not available.

Have you reviewed the Theme Hierarchy?

OK great …And I’ll look at the Theme Hierarchy in greater detail too.
    Thanks for your help!
