Lately I’ve been noticing that I get auto response emails from different mail providers saying that the address h*********[email protected] (yes, that’s what it actually says, with all the asterisks) doesn’t exist. When I check my cart abandonment recovery orders, I’ll see a recovery order with exactly that email address. All other orders are fine with the real email address, but then every now and then, I get an email address like k*******[email protected] not being valid.?

it appears someone is typing random email addresses or (more likely) is using an account dump file to generate test orders. Either that or they’re trying to circumvent giving me their real email address, but it happens with several users, not just 1 name. Since they fail, the cart abandonment script tries to send the recovery email, which then bounces and I see that bounce error email in my inbox.

my question: how can I block email accounts that contain an asterisk?

to pre-empt the suggestion: no, I do not want to do email verification and I don’t want to block free mail providers. I just want a way to prevent emails with * in them.

    Hello?@stoelwinder,

    Greetings for the day!

Cart abandonment plugin checks if the email address is valid or not. Valid in means of the email format. If the entered email address does not valid format then the plugin does not save such order data.

If I understood correctly, you want to check if the email address contains a specific character or not and exclude that email. But unfortunately, the plugin does not check if the email address contains specific characters (asterisks).

In this case, such emails are usually filled in by bots. We would suggest our users use the robot.txt file to exclude the checkout pages.

    Hope it clarifies.
