The Block Editor does not display Category or Tag Panels in the tools sidebar for pre-publish or published posts. They do show up in the Classic Editor.

I know this issue has been brought up before but I’ve yet to see a real solution. I just updated to version 6.6 and started using the Block Editor for the first time, so I don’t know if I would have had this issue with an earlier version.

Per previous forum responses, I went to Preferences and expected to see Panels as an option and checkboxes for Categories and Tags. There was no listing for Panels (just General, Appearance, Accessibility & Blocks).

I don’t really want to have to bounce back and forth between editors to add Categories (don’t really use tags anyway). Why is this still an issue and how can I fix it?

FYI – I ran a Site Health check and it returned the following alert:

The REST API did not behave correctly – Performance

The REST API is one way that WordPress and other applications communicate with the server. For example, the block editor screen relies on the REST API to display and save your posts and pages.

The REST API did not process the?context?query parameter correctly.

This works for me in various projects without any problems. I would recommend deactivating all plugins first and using a standard theme. If it then works normally, it was due to one of the deactivated ones.

Using WP6.6 out of the box, the categories and tags panels display and function correctly for me.

In case it helps, the documentation on the page and post settings sidebar illustrates where the panels can be found and contains dedicated sections on both categories and tags. There’s also a video on this Categories vs Tags page that illustrates the two panels in use.
