    Hi,

thanks for the awesome banner plugin, we use it quite frequently to show important information on the website. Recently I have activated the close button and like how it works.

Unfortunately I have seen, that the cookie is also set (when the close button is clicked) in case the user has not consent to the cookie banner and therefore in setting the simplebannerclosed cookie.

I have the possibility to block scripts in my cookie banner (CookieYes) in case the user has not consent to the respective cookie which is also used for Google analytics, etc..

Is there any way or any script how I can block the setting of the cookie when the user has not consent to it? In general I like the functionality with the cookie so I do not want to remove that completely.

    Thanks and kind regards
    Greendroid

    Hi,

The cookie set for the Simple Banner close button is a strictly necessary cookie, https://gdpr.eu/cookies/, and therefore does not require consent from the user.

    Hi rpetersen,

thanks for your quick answer. Are you sure? I checked your link and I would put the cookie into this category:

Preferences cookies — Also known as “functionality cookies,” these cookies allow a website to remember choices you have made in the past, like what language you prefer, what region you would like weather reports for, or what your user name and password are so you can automatically log in.

As the webpage remembers your choice to close the banner? This cookie expires (in my case) after 7 days, so it really saves the user preference.

    Kind regards

I definitely understand the confusion because it seems like this is somewhat in a grey area with the GDPR definitions. It’s not a preference because the user does not set the expiration. The expiration of the close button is set by the website owner, you in this case, and requires a cookie to be fully functional. Preference cookies, like the language example they give, do not generally affect choices you’ve set up as the website creator.

However, I will do some further research to fully confirm this for you.
