Bloated, messy, and lots of conflicts…
-
The developer has fixed the jQuery conflict issue, so I’m bumping up the rating a bit. Once the latest version comes out with some of these other issues fixed, I’ll probably bump it up more as they’re super responsive with their replies.
As for improvements? Cleaning up the code a little more and offering share counts on posts would be awesome. Other than that, it does what it says…
Original Review:
It’s been mentioned in the support forums for this plugin and even in some of the reviews, but this plugin is incredibly messy and bloated and, at this point, I can’t even recommend it to people.
For starters, the plugin adds a completely overdone and incredibly loud menu option to your WordPress admin. It doesn’t match the admin at all so it stands out from all the other sidebar items (It’s orange text on a black background – I kid you not). This doesn’t affect the functionality, but it’s annoying because there’s no need to single out your app. Users already have it installed and have made the choice to use it. It’s not like you’re trying to make it stand out from other plugins…
Then there’s the issue of the actual code – 24 additional JavaScript loads with this plugin enabled! I get that you’re trying to load all the different social media types, but there are absolutely better ways to do this. On top of that, there’s no sanitizing or conflict checking for jQuery so you’ll probably end up with tons of conflicts with other plugins just by enabling it. It’s really easy to setup jQuery to use the ‘$’ shortcut in more localized scopes so there’s no reason to try and let it takeover everything else. To add insult to injury, an old version of jQuery is loaded for it when most themes already load the latest version. The developer has baked in the ability for this plugin to get outdated immediately.
All that being said, I’m more than happy to update this rating if the developers get a handle on this thing. Posts in the support forum from the author seem to say that they’re working on updates, but I have yet to see an update that fixes these major issues. On top of that, the author seems to constantly say “I’ll check in with the developers” which means that they’re outsourcing the work on this to people other than themselves. Who the heck knows what’s deeper in the bowels of this plugin…
Sadly, other plugins that offer these functions are even worse as they include malware, JS that’s susceptible to injections, and really, really bad HTML/CSS. This is the cream of the crop right now, it’s just a shame that the cream is a bit spoiled and really, really heavy.
