Blank sitemap fix?

I’ve just started setting up SEO for a clients site and I was getting a blank page for the XML sitemap at first when I installed the plugin. I read the support but couldn’t get it to work following that, so I just played around a little with my site and I found that Unchecking “Disable author/user sitemap” , seems to fix the blank site map problem for me as far as I can see. But I’m non-the-wiser as to why. So I’m just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me? As I’m interested to know and make sure that I am doing things correctly.
