• Been having major problems attempting to update to 4.7. I have probably compounded the issue while trying to fix it.

Had a 4.6 install running fine. Ran the updater from the Dashboard. Everything seemed go go fine.

After update, site would load, but I had no access to any admin pages. I could reach the login screen, but no further. Keep getting a “Fatal Error” message with much info after it. Not being able to reach the admin screen left me with few options.

Via FTP, I deleted the entire contents of the directory. I then copied (via FTP) all the files from my computer backup made just before attempting the WP update. I was able to get everything working again.

Unfortunately, I could not resist the urge to try the update again. Big mistake.

First, I made sure ALL plug-ins were disabled. Then I updated the “default” WP themes (i.e. 2016). I also updated all my plug-ins (although left them disabled).

The 5.7 update seemed to go well again. However, this time the result was no access to the site or admin area. Everything showed a “Fatal Error” message.

So I deleted all the files and copied again from the same backup as before.

Now, I can only reach the admin area. The site itself simply generates a blank screen for any page on the site.

I checked my admin panel and all the content is there. It just does not show up in the browser. I tried disabling ALL plug-ins. No help. I tried with the standard, unaltered “2016” theme packaged with the install. Still no help.

No idea what to do now. My entire site is down and only shows blank pages. Ideally, I would like to get 4.7 going, but I would settle for anything at this point.

That post was my first stop before posting here. I tried all items on the list, except the manual install.

I was using a custom theme that took quite a bit of effort to set up. I am very concerned about losing content and needing to rebuild the entire site.

If I keep the content directory and one file (as described in the link you posted) will all my prior content, preferences and other theme set up info be protected?

I was also concerned that two separate attempts to upgrade went so horribly wrong. The first generated a “fatal error” which locked me out of the admin area. Second attempt resulted in a similar fatal error on both admin and complete site.

Removal of plug ins and 3rd party themes had no affect on either problem (other than to slightly change the “fatal error” details).

Something is so broken that replacement of all files with original backup copies still has the site generating a blank page. (Although I can accesss all admin functions)

    Follow-up…

Since the entire website was down anyway, I decided to try a manual install. I followed the “simple” directions in the link and was able to do so.

For whatever reason, that solved my problem. Everything seems to be working again.
