First time using WordPress. I have an existing website that I thought was due for a redesign. I wanted to try WordPress for my new design but since I need to populate it for a bit before I make it live, I wanted to test it in a subfolder before moving it to root and deleting the existing website as mentioned in the instructions on the site. As an FYI – I have a web design with basic coding (HTML, basic PHP) background and can navigate code but now I’m stumped:

    1. Downloaded WordPress 2.8.6.
    2. checked with my hosting company to make sure all is OK to use it
    3. Use MyPHPAdmin to set up a database and get all database name, password, location info
    4. Reconfigured and renamed config file before upload.
    5. renamed WordPress folder to “blog” and uploaded so now my soon to be new site would be at https://www.photolena.ca/blog/
    6. Ran the installation file – worked great – set up my info for the database connection without a problem. No connection error messages. I checked MyPHPAdmin and the new databases are all there, waiting to be filled in.
    7. Got to the login screen and was given my automatically generated password and “admin” name. Used it to login to the admin panel….

And then the screen went blank. Nothing. I can’t log out, I can’t see the admin panel. It’s white as snow. I’m on a Mac and I’ve tried it on both Safari and Firefox and both are updated.

I’ve followed the steps to reset my database password and reset it in the config file and reuploaded it. Nothing. Being on a Mac, I can see the blog folder using an FTP program and the only thing I can’t see is an .htaccess file.

Also – I cannot access anything at all in the “blog” folder. Not even the “readme.html” file. That shouldn’t happen, right? It’s an html file.

I’ve scoured the help files and forum and am stumped. Anyone know what I should do? I haven’t even gotten to the point of looking at a theme or setting preferences yet.

  • Your blog works just fine for me. Try clearing your browser cookie and cache. Exit the browser, then restart.

Too bad it doesn’t work for me.

I have done all those things. I get the login page. I use my username and password. It lets me in and I get a blank screen. Nothing.

I’m one step closer – I can read the “Read Me” file now. Still no admin panel. If I manuall type in the “index.php” all I see is three characters on a blank screen as well.

What else can I do? There’s something wrong here if you can see a blog or admin panel and I can’t – Firefox or Safari – nothing’s happening.

Does it help to add that after I enter my login information, the URL does not change? It still says “wp-login.php”. I would think I should be redirected to another URL at this point. If I type in a fake password – just for kicks – I do get the error message and am asked for a correct password, so that works.

Ah, I thought the admin worked in other browsers…sorry.

Typically, a blank screen just after installing means you didn’t get a complete and intact set of WordPress files uploaded to your host. I’d consider downloading a fresh copy of WordPress from the Download tab at the top of this page, then use something like 7-Zip to extract the files. Then reupload the files to your host. Review Uploading WordPress to a remote host and make sure you are using ASCII transfer mode in your FTP client.

If you have an .htaccess file, that too could be causing the problem–rename that if necessary.

Clean install did it. Something was corrupted. All fixed now. On to my first WordPress website. Thanks for all the amazing help.

I was just having the same issues as you were ohlenna. A fresh download and reinstall of wordpress seems to be the ticket.

I am having similar problems – new to WordPress, new to blogging, and want to add a blog on my existing website. I am running XP Pro. The ISP that hosts my site is a linux site and only offers WP 2.2.2 within the Scripts Library. Tried over and over with various fixes, but the latest, after uninstalling and reinstalling is this: Installation goes fine, and I can login, and the links “Write…” “Update…” “Add…” and “Change…” all seem to work. But then… if I click the Title, trying to change the Text or look and feel, I get the blank screen and the browser address line indicates: https://192.168.94.49/~busybee/wordpress/

    What’s happened?
Can the Default Theme be altered at all? Color? Even changing the text seems mysterious.
Finally, Can I use Swift Theme with WP 2.2.2. and can I upgrade WP on my website even though the ISP only provides the old version?

    Thanks!
