• Hello.

    I need some serious help and I understand from a help request I made last week – that I have made a pretty major mistake by not upgrading my version of wordpress in three years. Sorry – I am not that savvy and frankly, I’ve been a super happy wordpress user for a long, long time and didn’t realize that I should be upgrading. I had my blog built and when the designer gave me the access address to login and update – I just never thought about it again.

    Here I am though, unable to login into my blog. I normally go to https://cupcakeshow.com/wp-admin/ – but when I click the link (in Safari, Firefox and IE – and I cleared my cookies) the page is just blank. And when I try to approve a comment someone has left, again, the screen just goes blank.

    I need to figure out how to get to my dashboard and then I can upgrade my version of wordpress right? Any help, snarky or non-snarky would be appreciated. I am really at a loss here and I’m anxious to work this out.

    Please respond!

    Thank you in advance.

    That will get you to the login. Can’t say if it will still work or not.

    [Edit]

    I see one hidden link, top right, outside of your header,

    <font style="position: absolute; height: 0pt; width: 0pt;">
    <a href="https://podloni.co.cc">https://podloni.co.cc</a>
    </font>

    It looks to be buried under or near your site meter. I messed around with it long enough and finally triggered a pop up offer and was redirected to an anti-virus scan site in FF3. I suspect it might have happened sooner if I had been using IE.

    Also, I don’t know if it helps, but your server says your cupcake (current?) theme was last modified 09/09/08.

    Might be worth taking a look in that folder as well.

    Thank you ClaytonJames! I really appreciate you offering me some help!

    Sadly, I could not login. I even used the new password the WordPress sent me. And I tired all of my past passwords.

    I also tried to visit the link you provided above: https://cupcakeshow.com/wp-content/themes/

    but I don’t really understand what I’m seeing. I can see the names of all of the past themes I’ve used, but they don’t seem to lead anywhere. I’m sorry that I’m such a dunce when it comes to this stuff… so if you have any tips for me, I’d really be thankful.

    Is there anything else anyone can think of? I don’t want to lose my blog forever.

    Thanks again ClaytonJames.

    I think it would not be unreasonable for you to assume that there has been some sort of intrusion. That version of WP is very, very old. It might be time to consider backing up your files (I guess I will assume you may not be doing that regularly as well), …download all your files with an ftp client and save them locally. Back up your database information using whatever tools are available to you through your hosting service, and then start fresh. You will need to very carefully inspect any files you choose to reuse prior to putting them back on your server. That includes pawing through your database and-or being very selective about what you re-import back into the new installation. You may also find you have some theme issues to deal with as well. Going from 1.5 to 2.6 is quite a leap. If you choose not to do that, and you want to try and clean things up and then upgrade, at the very least, you will need to repair your admin information in your database in order to log back in. Either way, it seems you may have some reading and learning ahead of you. Here are a couple of starting points for you.

    Clayton James –
    You are the best. I really, REALLY appreciate the time you took to explain things to me.
    I am going to work on all of these things today. And you’re right – I do have a lot of learning to do. I have no clue about the back up – and reading through the code will be a nightmare, but I’m going to do it and try to fix this once and for all.

    The funny thing is, yesterday – I was simply able to log in with no problems. Like these past few days didn’t even exist.

    I honestly had no idea that I should be upgrading my version of WP this whole time. I never even think about it. My blog has always worked great and WP has always been wonderful.

    Thank you again for responding to me and providing me with these links.

    Kari
