• I recently installed WP 3.0.4 and everything had been running smoothly until this weekend. I go to my website and the home page shows up, along with the full menu. But anytime you select a menu item, it goes to a blank page.

The admin area of WP shows up and I’m able to see every page, edit and save them without a problem. Yet when I hit “View Page” from within the admin panel, it opens a blank page. At first I thought I had some bad code in my custom theme so I deleted the theme but even the problem persists using the provided Twenty Ten theme.

Odd thing: When I log into my cPanel to view the error log, every error says: “File does not exist” with the full path of each page that I’ve tried viewing. But it obviously exists – I can view and edit it within WP’s admin area. Hmmm.

Link to the site is https://www.algonaefree.org/wp/. Any solutions out there to this weird problem? Thanks for the help!

  • I suggest you start with resetting your permalinks.

Go to dashboard menu Settings / permalinks.

Take note of what your permalink settings are. Then switch to the default permalinks and save. Then set your permalinks back to what they were prior to setting them to defaul.

The reason for doing all this is it forces WordPress to recreate all of its permalink code. Many (and not all) times this resolves problems such as you are experiencing.

Genius! I had “pretty” permalinks and switched it to the default. Refreshed the site and it worked. But when I go back to the pretty permalinks, the page goes white again. I’ll leave it on default for now so I can work on the site but it’d be nice to go back to the nicer structure. Thanks for the tip!

what are you setting the pretty permalinks to? if one of the predefined selections, fine. But if you are entering custom, what are you entering?

I’m using the same structure I’ve used with several other sites (and which worked for a while on this site before it stopped):

    /%category%/%postname%/

No good? If there’s another structure I should use, I’d be interested in knowing. Thanks!

    That’s not a good choice. Review Using_Permalinks.
