• Hi All,

I recently went through the indexing process for Google and Bing.

I installed the most popular SEO plugin in WP and did some optimization.

Some pages are rated green by the plugin. Others are rated yellow, orange and red.

When I search for my site in Bing, the home page is at the top of the search on page 1. In Google, the homepage is nowhere to be found, but one of my other site pages appears in the search at the top of page 3 of the search results.

Is Google indexing really that difficult? What am I doing wrong? Do I have to have all pages rated green in SEO before Google will put my site homepage at the top of their search?

    Thanks,

    cmeister

No, it’s a whole lot harder. I can’t emphasise that enough.

Everyone wants to be at the top of Google, so have a look at how many results there are for your target keyword. If there’s 10,000,000 (a reasonable amount) that means that your site has 10,000,000 people out there that want the same position as you do.

SEO is not only just about on-page stuff. Having the SEO “green light” doesn’t mean that you’ll get anywhere. You need a lot more work and effort in building backlinks to get into the top results pages. And evne then, Google changes their ranking algorythm very often so there’s no guarantee that anything you do today will count tomorrow.

    Thanks catacaustic.

My site is not one that would be competing for a top spot in the search. It’s a site for a municipal candidate for city council. Her name is unique and is in her URL: www.candidate_name.ca

Knowing that, what would I need to focus on, to improve the site’s ranking?

    Thanks

Link building most likely. And patience. SEO for Google is a long-term prospect. It cannot be done overnight.

And just because you’ve got her name in the domain name, that will only help a small bit. Think abotu how many large newspapers, government agencies, and other political organisations will have her name on their website. Those sites are most likely larger, older and be thought of as more authorative then your site, so they will rank higher for those factors alone.

    OK thanks.

I’ll keep plugging away at it.
