• I’ve got a prospective client who wants a bilingual site– English and Italian.

Is there a plugin that allows for a website visitor to decide which language they want view the site in by just simply clicking on the language? And if so, are there any particular bugs/side effects that I should be aware of? Thanks.

Is it safe to say that both of you guys vouch for the latest plugin? It looks pretty scarry ??

No, we don’t vouch for anything. Ever. Using plugins is always your own responsibility.
You asked a question – we gave directions. That’s all.

If the ability to switch from one language to the other “on the fly” isn’t crucial, consider running two installs. That’s the approach I’m taking with a site I’m working on. I’ll have one install in mysite.com/en and one in mysite.com/fr and a splash page (I hate them in general, but this is appropriate). Splash page will give the user option to select which language they want.

Then in my template for the english version, I’ll add a link to the French homepage. Same for the French to English.

I think that in terms of SEO, this might be better. I haven’t looked at Gengo, but having used many translation schemes, one of the issues I found lacking were the ability to have keywords/description in all languages (penalties if you have English keywords on a French page content, for instance).

Just my 2 devaluated kiwi cents.
