I am using a theme for a local bilingual business directory that is not WPML compatible (Vantage from appthemes). Our categories can be quite long in Spanish alone. If I am forced to use both the English and Spanish in one category, the length is too much to manage. For example: Sillas de Ruedas – Servicios Especiales de Transportación ? Wheelchair and Special Needs Transportation

Is it possible to use a single database with two independent installations of WordPress, one in English and the other using properly translated gettext .mo/.po files to translate the second site into Spanish? The shared database would be key as we do not wish to duplicate all of our data entry and time required for maintenance.

Barring that option, does anyone know of any other trick that might help us accomplish this?

  • For multilingual installation on a single site, you will need a plugin such as WPML. There are other alternatives, such as the mqTranslate plugin that you might want to investigate. If your theme has not been designed to support multilanguage structures, you may also need to find a new theme. For more information on single site installation, please review: Installing_WordPress_in_Your_Language

Alternatively, you could investigate using WordPress Multi-site, which allows for a language selection on a per-blog basis through the “Site language” option under Settings → General subpanel. For more information on WordPress Multi-site, please review: Create_A_Network
