• WP-SpamShield is very easy to set up and blocks spam more consistently than Akismet (which has gotten expensive).

Edit: I initially gave this plugin 4 stars instead of 5 because of one concern, which was that blocked spam does not get put into the spam folder. However, the author has since explained that this is an additional layer of security and that it is possible to see what comments have been blocked by enabling Blocked Comment Logging Mode.

    Hey Peter!

Thanks for the great review! There actually is a way to check for what spam is blocked. You just need to turn on “Blocked Comment Logging Mode”. It is more secure to keep spam out of the database entirely, which is why we made he decision to not place spam in the spam folder. It makes WP-SpamShield an extra security layer in your site. All of the comment-based security vulnerabilities that existed in WordPress 4.2.1 and below were all blocked by WP-SpamShield, so sites using it were protected because of this exact feature, that we do not place spam in the spam folder. Hope that helps clarify! Have a great week!
