For some reason the test emails work when I use the Better Notifications plugin, but, when actually setting up new users, we’re still getting the system email sent out (and no Better Notifications email sent out as we had set up and tested). It just seems like the system is overriding Better Notifications when really setting users up. Please help.

Here is the message we keep getting instead of what we set up:

    Hi adavella,
    Thanks for your message.

Can you please test with the latest version of WordPress, with the default Twenty Fifteen theme, and only BNFW activated in plugins and see if this fixes anything for you?

Can you also confirm the name of the notification you’re setting up in the BNFW settings?

    Thanks,
    Jack

From what I’ve seen there are probably quite a few individual site situations with maybe theme inconsistencies with activation, re-send welcome email, and SB or BN customization of the 3 messages.

I will be reporting to the boss today that we DO NOT have an effective means of managing regiatered users.

    1) we cannot send a reactivation message (a resend ‘welcome message’ just does not get sent;
    2) (admins will get the ‘someone registered’ email and we can modify it but there is no need to, really,
    3) all the user will get is an un-modified (both SB and BN do not modify it) alarming message about his password being changed by unknown persons from the people who did change and are incorrect in suggesting that it could have been maliciously.

    I can only rant!

I thank anyone who could give good advise that might help me ultimately through this.

    Hi paulsbkk,
    Thanks for your message.

There are a few new notifications that WordPress 4 introduced which haven’t yet been added to BNFW which is why you might be seeing the default password modified email.

Could you please clarify the acronyms ‘SB’ and ‘BN’?

Can you also verify that you’ve tested with the latest version of WordPress, with the default Twenty Fifteen theme, and only BNFW activated in plugins and see if this fixes anything for you?

    Thanks,
    Jack

    Hi voltronik,

I did what you said – deactivated all the plugins and set up a new user under the 2015 themes – but it is still happening. I still get the system email.

The notification I’m trying to set up is: New User – Welcome Email

    What else might I do?

    Hi Anthony,

There are potentially 3 emails that can get sent out when a new user register. These are:

    • New User Registration – For Admin
    • New User Registration – For User
    • New User – Welcome Email

BNFW should only suppress the default WordPress notification providing that you have a replacement set-up in BNFW.

The New User Registration – For User email is the one that allows you to customise the most and is probably the one you need to use.

The New User – Welcome Email gets sent out at the same time (if it’s set up) however, this is designed to be a follow-up email to introduce a user to the site.

For example: You send a user their details using the New User Registration – For User notification but you’d also like to let them know of special offers that new users are entitled to: this is what the Welcome Email – For User notification is for.

I think if you replace the New User – Welcome Email notification with the New User Registration – For User notification, this should solve your problem.

Please also be sure to check out which shortcode you can use for each notification here, as they do differ between the two.

Hope this helps and let me know how you get on.

    Thanks,
    Jack

    Hi Jack,

Thanks so much for writing back.

I added the New User Registration – For User email and I get the same issue: the tests send out fine but adding a new user still sends the system activation email.

I wonder why the email tests work fine but the actual user setup is not overriding the system email. What do you think?

    Anthony

My apologies for the ‘shorthand’ by SB and BN I was referring to the plugins SB Edit Welcome Email and BNFW.

I am learning a lot of code works best with the 2015 themes. But we committed to another template that we are seeing through and recently making a server move we deleted the unused themes. Maybe I’ll get them back soon and let you know.

It’s disappointing that we are at that point where requiring reactivation for all those spam registrations that came in the first days online would be the correct way to get the userbase on its way, maybe a rollback?!

    Hi paulsbkk,
You’re lost me i’m afraid – what SPAM registration are you seeing? Is this related to BNFW or another plugin?

    Hi Anthony,
Can you try installing the Email Log plugin and see if the email notification is regsitered there? If it’s being sent out but not received, you may need to look into configuring an SMTP plugin but let me know how you get on with the Email Log first. Please post screenshots if you can.

    Thanks,
    Jack
