• I know, a ridiculous easy (or should be) question, right!

While I run a few of my own wordpress sites, I’ve now been asked to design a simple site for someone else.

My question is, what is the best way to go about this? Do I have them buy their domain/hosting + the theme, then give me the passwords to log in to their stuff and create it?

Or, how can I create it myself, then once the design is done, transfer it over to them? (Ideally, without having to buy the domain name or spend any money out of pocket myself!)

Designers out there, what do you do?? Thanks!

  • What I do is get them to buy the domain name and set up hosting.

I don’t bother buying themes as I usually make them a custom theme starting from my own starter theme or pick a free one from the repo and make a child theme.

Once they have hosting set up, I get the FTP, install WordPress and start building the site. Once it’s ready, I create a username and password for them and then show them out to make updates.

    Thanks Christine!

Embarrassingly, I don’t understand FTP. I know what it is/means, but can you, or anyone, give me a little more step-by-step of how to do that?

I have them go to a domain registrar and buy their domain. Next they go to a web host and sign up for an account. Then they can use the easy one click Fantastico wordpress setup that is available in the cpanel. There are other quick wordpress setups that are similar to my webhost. I’m using hostgator. Then either they or I copy the nameservers in the lower left of the cpanel and go to the domain registrar to their account to set nameservers and paste the two name servers into the box. After the installation at the webhost you receive an email with the username that you or they chose and with a password that can be reset later. Copy the password and click the link in the email to login to the site. Paste the link in the login box and put the username in it. You or your client will then be in the dashboard of wordpress. Here is a list of the steps with video tutorials, this way you don’t use the FTP, Hope this helps and good luck https://studiomediacam.com/dashboard-2/5-step-wordpress-site-setup/

Here some great info about FTP:

Your hosting provider should be able to provide you with info as well.

    Hi,

This might be a bit beyond where you are right now, but as soon as you figure out your system, the next thing you will focus on in your clients experience of using WordPress.

We wrote a very popular free ebook about this subject called A Better WordPress For Clients:

    Check it out.
