• Hello, I’m a newbie. What is the best (and free) way to create independent media galleries that can be used both as standalone content AND also be able to drop them in middle of other content?

I have found plugins for media galleries that claim to offer standalone functionality, like this one: Envira But I am reluctant to buy into propitiatory code that could become obsolete in the future or conflict with other plugins.

So is there an easy way to create separate posts for various media galleries but then be able to drop those posts in middle of other posts, like in middle of text?

If this question has been asked a million times before, yes, I did search for past posts, but things that came up were old, some from 6 years ago. Obviously things have improved a lot and I am looking for the latest, cleanest method.

  • Envira is the best gallery plugin available. That said, there are free alternatives. Foo Gallery and Next Gen Gallery both offer some of the same features.

Hello Angie, thanks for your reply. i have found that I can reuse any gallery by just putting the coding inside another post.

For example, I can put, say:

    [gallery link="file" ids="23,22,21,18,17,25,24,20,19,16,15,13"]

in middle of any post , or put it in a new post by itself to for an independent gallery.

This is so simple. So my question is: why do I need a gallery like Envira, which advertises ability for “standalone” galleries?

    thank you.

If you use that shortcode method, when you update the gallery on one page, the other pages would not be updated automatically. You’re effectively duplicating the gallery when you copy the shortcode.

Envira presumably (I’ve never used it) updates all instances of the gallery whenever you make a change. It also appears to advertise many other features. They’re hardly selling themselves just on the ability to have standalone galleries.

Hi JakePT, oh, Envira is not shy at all in promotion of its many features and its constant reminders about upgrades, which are not cheap.

You make a great point about shortcode method not automatically updating. Thank you.

Can suggest a similar method to reuse galleries that would automatically update (without buying Envira)? It’s not just wanting to avoid paying for Envira. Its lightbox layout I’ve seen in the free version is kind of clunky. I already have achieved pretty good-looking layout and navigation using free tools like PhotoSwipe.

I just want to be able to reuse galleries in different posts but have them automatically update when I later change the galleries. For example, is there a way to give a gallery a code name, instead of spell out the photo id’s in shortcode? There must be a free and simple plugin that does that.

    Thank you in advance.
