best way to re-organize large site

    I need to re-organize a massive site. Its regular visitors will be upset if everything is suddenly put in different places. So we will have to have a legacy site and a new site be both available for some transition period.

    My question is, is it okay to put the new site at www.normalURL/new, or will that mess us up with Google? I want to make sure people can still find us when doing a google search.

  • What you are suggesting is ok, however it might be better to create a sub-domain instead of a sub-directory. For example you may wish to develop your new site at www.new.normalURL instead of www.normalURL/new. Most internal links are relative to the root of your web site. When you finally move from www.new.normalUR to www.normalURL, your links will likely still work without modification.

    Also, when you flip the switch, you can have www.old.normalURL point to the old site.

    As long as the old URLs are 301 redirected to the new URL then you will not get any penalty from search engines. People will still be able to find your content and the search engines will adjust.
